If you have so much to say about this experience, why didn't you say it when the best chance to air these issues out and get to the bottom of the matter at hand was available to you? Be pro-active with your breweries instead of this backhanded undermining stuff.

Asking is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, I don't see how a polite request could be met with any sort of resistance.

That's the worst experience you've had at a brewery? Consider yourself lucky

I see it at restaurants all the time. I have stopped having mixed drinks, beers, and other alcoholic beverages. I hate being that guy who asks. So I just don't buy. As far as breweries, most Ive seen have small menus with select prices. Sometimes a seasonal is a bit more. There is always a chalkboard with info though. Thats a must

$10 a growler fill is a steal though (in NYC), especially if it's a good pale ale!

Having to ask questions and dealing with a new employee? This is your worst experience? WTF. Have some respect, everyone is new at their job at one point.

What? Do you think they were trying to play you? For a 10$ growler? Good grief.

$10 for a 32 oz. growler??? Wow, that is QUITE steep.

Locally, I've never paid more than $10 for a 64 oz. growler (and may I add, 10 Canadian Dollars )

Ok 10$ for a half growler is a rip off. Still though, you are a human being, use your words.

$10 for a 32 oz is pretty standard in my opinion. That is $5 per pint to take home. I typically see at least $10 as the beginning price for 32oz fills.

I can't see how you would not list prices. I have never encountered this at a brewery but I have at a bar recently. Although I loved the place, the Great Lost Bear in Portland Maine didn't list their prices for beer, but did for their food. Seemed kind of odd.

I personally don't feel the $10 price tag is that steep, especially since in MA you have to use that brewery's growlers and since you don't know the prices I would say you had to buy it. A 750 ml growler is less than 32 oz (@ 25oz) and they go for around $8 without the glass. Buying in bulk (64oz) would probably have been around $16 but that's purely a guess.

I'm not sure how this is backhanded since the OP never called out the brewery by name or is trying to throw this post in their face. Also, some people don't like to speak up for numerous reasons and reflect on their experience after the fact. If the OP had a pretty good idea on what he would pay why should he feel uncomfortable over a few dollars?

I would have at least said something too like hey are you new here or something?

I would have also but I'm not going to fault someone for not speaking up themselves, especially if it makes them uncomfortable in some way. It's still crap that they don't post prices.

That is entirely subjective and different breweries price things differently. If you're not new to this race. That much should be known right up front. Some breweries price their growlers on the lowside so that they can move them, others price them according to what they think is the correct profit margin for the time and material.
Why do I think it is backhanded? A business will never know they are doing something "wrong" unless someone is proactive and tells them or asks that question about why this, and not that?

I don't frequent places that don't post prices. To me, to force customers into blind purchases or having to inquire about price is a BAD business practice.

There are so many questions that need to be answered by the OP for this scenario, but with the OP having had over 800 beers I would say he is no newbie. Also, he said it was an established brewery that moved to a new location which makes me think he has at least been to the old brewery and has an idea of the prices (this is all speculation on my part). Like I said, a bunch of questions need to be answered.

When I read your post I took it as you yelling at the OP for being passive aggressive toward the brewery, but without him calling out the brewery I didn't think that was the case.

The problem is, the OP had more than just an issue with "no labeled pricing" and seemed to have an overall bad experience which is a lot broader than his post headline.

Maybe we can throw this entire post into the pile of, "Who gives a s**t".
