This whole Stone going after the little guy thing has me thinking... Over the years, Stone has tried way too hard. From seeing Stone BBQ Sauce and beef jerky at my local hipster grocery store, to them straight falling on their faces over in Berlin, I can’t help but think that they are overdoing things and trying way too hard. Seriously. Who out there was asking for some Stone grass fed jerky? Or a West Coast IPA while in Germany? Huh? Really? And wasn’t there a plan for a Stone Hotel? Guys... chill! Look in the mirror and get back to brewing - for the most part - good, and basic beer!

So BA’s - do you see anyone else that is trying way too hard or doing too much?

Only speaking to the litigious BS, I think that Big Beer organization needs to back off. So many small class lawsuits with little merit...

Keystone. How many people would not identify Stone versus Keystone based on...

Location in distributor to walrus piss versus craft?

Name of Stone beer versus walrus piss?

Stone IPA? Walrus piss purveyor won't touch Stone beers with "wierd names"

Price? Walrus piss Keystone purveyors won't touch Stone products at 2x price.

Prevalence of smartphone users? Walrus piss Keystone drinkers do not use a smartphone to reference beer....but Stone drinkers would.

The class is miniscule that got affected...for f%^¥ sake, it is dumb.

Ditto on Stone, bit of a shame as Stone IPA is, or last time I had it was still outstanding. As you said, I don’t believe they need to go after the little guys.

Stone Berlin is pointless for me as it doesn’t even reach us here. In the meantime, Lagunitas and Sierra Nevada are thriving judging from how fast the space on the shelves for either goes empty.

Atwater Brewing here in Michigan has opened 3-4 other locations over the past several years, and I don't know how they stay in business. I haven't tried their beers for several years, but nothing was very good when I did. Maybe I should try them again, and maybe I should visit some of their locations and find that they are busy. I might discover that I'm speaking wrongly here.

10 years ago they announced plans to build a new brewery in Texas, but nothing ever happened on that. (You're lucky, Texas.)

Flying Dog. They still have the ability to make new, solid well crafted beers, but they seem to be frequently chasing the creation of gimmick beers lately. On ocassion they still make a new solid beer but they are few and far between their portfolio of 10 years ago.

Back to Stone, I don't blame them for trying to break into a European market. I thought it was a good idea, made more sense the way the industry was going hyper-local here/oversaturation, to go into an untapped market. There were just some unexpected obsticals in Berlin that they didn't account for. Maybe a different European city/country would have been a better business model location if they did more research first.

Lagunitas and SN provide better value imo as well, quality vs price is hard to beat and imo the beers a bit more mainstream. I like some of Stone beers, others I can live with out, but I won’t knock them for trying to expand their base or for pushing the envelope, It’s still a business.

Didn’t they get purchased by somebody? Also, didn’t they plan a distillery to match their bad beer?
They are also the ones the that stuffed a beer in a dead squirrel to sell for an outrageous amount.

Stone and any brewery that has more than 4 IPA's in year round production.

The thing is, they should not have been unexpected, Stone just chose to do zero market research and go in guns blazing with a yee-haw attitude thinking they can take on everything. Every single obstacle they encountered would have been very obvious to a German person, maybe they should have talked to a few before investing millions of dollars into this enterprise.

You know, at first I thought that they had simply done bad market research or underestimated the challenges, but Greg Koch has actually stated personally that no market research was done, which is just absolutely incredible to me.

I haven't heard anything about a recent purchase. Back in 2005 one of the major investors purchased the brewery outright, but that's all that I can find.

I didn't know it but their website says that they do have included at their Grosse Pointe Park brewery location what they call Atwater Spirits and Wine, so there must be a distilling operation somewhere.

I misspoke in my first post about their number of locations. There are only three (Detroit, Grosse Pointe Park, and Grand Rapids), but I think one was opened in Detroit somewhere and later moved to Grosse Pointe Park, so that's why I was thinking at least 4 places.

Brewdog sucks so much. I've never had their beer, but their business practices are garbage. Also, marketing as punk, then being as corporate as it gets by not paying people for the ideas you stole is anti-punk. I despise them and wish my LBS did not carry them.

Stone and Brewdog pretty much define this question.

Locally, and much less egregiously, sudwerk brewing started getting into hazy ipls a few years ago and they are great beers. Unfortunately, instead of establishing some regular brands they went with a system of constantly rotating one offs (some seem to pop back up from time to.time). I understand that this is the trend and that there is reasons for this related to consumer behavior, but damn man. Make a couple good ones and let me buy them regularly please

    Did this deal fall through?

Yes, apparently they've been making hand sanitizer (see below).

Atwater isn't listed as one of Molson Coors brands, but they are highlighted in some of MC's blog posts and news releases. Here's one from April: https://www.molsoncoorsblog.com/fea...ry-turned-hand-sanitizer-manufacturers-almost

MC had a rough first quarter (brewery shooting in Feb, COVID-19 slowdown) and they're making a huge seltzer push. Wouldn't be surprised if they have bigger concerns than closing the deal on a middling (at-best) brewery with limited appeal outside its home state (15-state distribution but nearly 2/3 of their beer production is sold in MI).

I remember 12-15 years ago thinking Atwater’s Vanilla Java Porter was great. Man, have things come a long way.

Year round? Disgusting! A proper craft brewery has 13 ipas on tap, and none of them will ever be brewed (branded) again

I learned a new (well, new to me) beer industry term from Jamil Zainasheff in the Ask Me Anything thread. SBDL: Same Beer Different Label.

    Cheers!
