Picked up a sixer of 21st IPA in Raleigh because I can't get it here in sc. Can says cold springs mn on it. Googled, found the relationship, that 21st cans some or all of their beer in Minnesota.

So, how do they ship the beer from SF to MInnesota? And how is more cost effective than building a canning line in the brewery?

It's brewed and canned at a brewery in MN, not shipped there. Check the can and it probably says something like "brewed and canned at........."

Weird. Everything I find is so aloof about it.

On the can it says 21st Amendment Brewery, Cold Springs, MN. What's up with that?
Building a canning facility from scratch is an expensive task. If we had to build our own canning facility, our beers would probably be in bottles. But once we decided we wanted cans, we were determined to make it work. We figured there must be some breweries in the Midwest who wouldn’t mind increasing the production on their canning lines, so we started looking. We found a fantastic partner in Cold Springs, MN who was willing to work with us to meet our unusually high standards for canned beer.

It's not really weird at all. 21A, being a brewpub, probably simply didn't have enough space for a canning line and additional capacity to widely distribute it.

21A still brews at their restaurant. It's cheaper for them to contract brew at the MN brewery. It's not an uncommon practice.
About the aloof thing, well it's their thing; a tongue-in-cheek attitude towards everything. However the beer is no joke!
Brew Free! and Hop Crisis are awesome!

(Insert required "but they market their beer as local to SF" comment here).
