I’ve noticed an uptick in news about closures, partnerships and other consolidations in Ontario (and other parts of the country). It might be nice to have a thread in which we can track these. I believe there used to be one, but I can’t locate it. Boshkung and Katalyst are closing up, the former only it’s original spot. Good Prospects as well. Laylow is closing, but plans to stay around in other ways. Halo, Signal, Spearhead, Fenelon Falls are all being acquired by others. This is on top of the closing of Barncat, Rythym and Brews, and several others earlier this year. Are we seeing a levelling off the number of active breweries in Ontario (or Canada)?
I'd say yes, the pandemic definitely aided the acceleration of these breweries, mixed in with the GTA's obsession with real estate, it's tough to be financially feasible, or obtain space to brew. Unfortunately typical in any economic landscape. New buzz brings in so many new businesses, eventually you oversaturate the market, and it levels off.
Huh, hadn't heard of Still Fields either. In BC Callister is shutting down and Studio just announced closing, both end of December.
Really disappointing to hear that Studio is closing. Everything I had from them was good to great and that neighbourhood is underserved.
