I'll be visiting from San Diego next week and I'm looking for brewery recommendations. Not really familiar with most in the area except for Surly. Mainly interested in good stouts / BA stouts and cool places that are close to where I'll be staying near the Convention Center.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regular stouts or imperial stouts? The "BA stouts" note makes me suspect the latter.

Surly, Sisyphus, Town Hall, Dangerous Man, Indeed, and Fulton, all within a few miles of downtown Minneapolis, are above-average breweries known for stouts (and more so imperial stouts), to one degree or another. That would be roughly my order of recommendation.

Republic is a nationally well regarded beer bar near downtown Minneapolis. They'll surely have good stouts on tap. Town Hall Brewery is across the street from them too so you can kill two birds there.

Summit Dark Infusion is coming out tomorrow, it's a really fantastic Imperial Coffee Milk Stout. If Town Hall has any of their BA stuff order it without hesitation.

Modist, Fulton, and inbound are all close proximity to convention center and each other. A first draft just opened up nearby too I think. Dangerous man and indeed are great and somewhat close to each other, though not walking distance from convention center. A lot of places to eat, but don’t miss butcher and the boar. Just a block or two from the convention center. Go to the beer garden in the back. Usually have a good BA stout on.

Closer to the airport, but Wild Mind is a must stop in my book. Also for food, and not extremely far from there I recommend Pizzaria Lola.

Both great places, I would also add a nod to Red Wagon Pizza as an option if the wait at Lola is too long!

Just checking in after my time in MN last week. Thanks to everyone for the great recommendations! I got to check out a bunch of places while I was there. List includes Surly, Fulton, Modist, Indeed, Dangerous Man, Sisyphus, Lakes and Legends, Butcher and The Boar plus a couple other bars. The highlight for me was Butcher and The Boar -- great food and nice BA Stouts on tap. Also like the stouts at Fulton. Biggest disappointment was Surly. I thought the beer was mediocre at best. I was also able to pull off an IP trade with one of the local members on here (Pliny for BA Darkness). All in all I had a great time. Thanks again!

You aren't alone in this assessment.

Urban Growler's beers are worth a look if you are in the area again, but go out of your way to watch for any of Montgomery brewings ales. Small brewery an hour or so south of Minneapolis, everything they make is hand crafted and well made, I've been very impressed. Even the 1 or 2 I didn't like a lot were just not my cup of tea, I could still tell they were very well made.

I would put both of these far, far down the list. Especially Urban Growler.
