Will be traveling to Wake Forest-Raleigh-Durham area for the holidays. Looking for reccomendations for local breweries to visit.
If you like Sours and farmhouse style Ales, check out Haw River Farmhouse Ales, newly opened and gets some great word of mouth recommendations. It's in Saxahapawha, maybe 30 minutes drive. Bull City Burgers in Durham , they brew superb English style ales and such, brewed on site, the best burgers in NC all home made stuff.
I've heard good things about Haw River, but have not tried them yet. I'd recommend the Raleigh Brewing Compay and Trophy Brewing (very good beer, great pizza). The Triangle area has lots of breweries that to my mind are good, but none that are great, yet.
In Winston, Hoots and Foothills are the obvious choices, both downtown. Both offer solid lineups. Not sure what the growler laws are in Penn, but I recommend bringing yours, as you can get most anything offered on draft in a growler.
Duck Rabbit Brewery is really nice. I went a couple of times when I lived in NC. It's about an hour from Raleigh in a town called Farmville. Their Milk Stout is very good. They have a cool little tasting room and I think they offer tours. Have fun on your trip!
Trophy, Crank Arm, and Steel String were all solid places along with the others mentioned. Fullsteam and Bull City Burgers were great stops too. Bull City has excellent burgers. That was my wife's favorite stop.
In addition to the breweries already mentioned, if you're going to be in Wake Forest, check out White Street Brewing. Very solid beer. I'm a big fan of their Hoptimist IPA.
Agreed, I've enjoyed most of what I've had from them. They're not on many radars, but I think they will be in the years to come. They're currently expanding into a much larger building with a bigger brewhouse, and will be packaging, too.
Lynnwood Brewing Concern does not get mentioned very often, but they have some solid selections. In particular their Hop on Top IPA is very good.
