I visited Mayflower brewery recently. To my surprise they charged 10$ per person for a taster of their beer selection. Just a year ago, there was no fee for the taster :grimacing:. It may be because the rise of people attending these tastings but I was wondering, what do other breweries typically charge for their taster? Whats the Highest cost you have seen?

5 cups 7 oz pours. They start you from light to dark.

    Pale Ale
    Golden Ale
    Seasonal, which was Summer Rye
    IPA
    Porter (which was my favorite)

I mean free is always better, but $10 for 35oz of beer isn't horrible by any means

Seems reasonable...35 oz of beer. You might be paying $10 for 2 beers and then you only are able to try two different beers or two styles. We do have to pay for the convenience of trying 5 beers in medium sized pours

It's not unusual for a brewery to roll-out with free tasters at the brewery. It allows them to get a ton of people through the doors quickly and lets folks get a taste of everything. Good business practice.

I don't know of too many places that give away free tasters nowadays, especially w/o a tour.

Only free one I've been to is Abita. It's open for a couple hours. They give you a cup. There's a do a fountain type thing of most of their beer. Help yourself, watch a video, and take a brief tour. It's lovely.

Terrapin charges 10 for 8 quarter pours. Usually ends up being 8 half pours. Sometimes 8 full pours if it's your birthday, flirt, or tip.

Creature Comforts was $12 for 6 quarter pours and a food coupon. Pours were consistently 3/4 pours, though. Apparently measurement just isn't a thing in Athens.

Cantillon is like....8 euro, maybe? You get two small glasses of your choice of lambic, geuze, iris, kriek, and maybe framboise. It's been awhile since I've done it. Usually just let my friends go and I sit at the bar drinking vintage Zwanze >_>

Noble ale works charges 9$ for 5 6oz ish tasters. The bruery charges by the beer for a taster usually 1-2$ depending on the beer.

I think that every brewery I've been to has been different. Sometimes it has to do with liquor licenses- some are limited in the amount they can pour (only 2 oz tasters, for instance, might mean they're $1).

I prefer a "choose your own" where you write in the names- Alpine does this very well. They then arrange (4 or 6 tasters, usually around 6 oz each) in a muffin tin that is numbered based on what you chose. If they suggest a different order they will tell you. I think the flights are $7 or $10.

MKE Brewing Co used to give you a glass and allow unlimited fills while you were on tour (and after your tour). Now they limit. I'm not sure I'd want to drink more than 2 pints of their beer, but folks used to get hammered there.

Yeah they have the option of a free 2 oz Pour. Yeah that sounds great, only issue is Mayflowers a small brewery and at one time only have 5-7 beers for a line up. Thats when i prefer to go light-dark/heavy.

Since I'm in Mass and relatively close, I'm planning on visiting Jack's Abby and Clown Shoes (not sure if they have tastings) in the near future!

There's no such thing as a free buzz anymore. In my book, it went away around the same time as the free lunch.

I'd say most tasters offer between 24-36oz of beer and charge between $7-12.

I went to Harpoon last month and was kind of surprised their sampler was $9, but it's Boston so prices are always going to be nuts.

    Right, Taxachusetts for ya.

But i gues you pay extra for the selection of types, experience, and off the tap.

Considering you could get a 6 pack of 12 oz bottles around the same price

Mass law - they have to charge if you're sampling more than 2oz. So in the past it was either free and 2oz max pours or they got in trouble with the law.

Jack's Abby does 4 or 5 oz pours of almost everything on tap for $1-$4 per depending on the beer. Clown Shoes contract brews so there's no "them" to visit.
