Brewing a Rye Beer?

    I like this. I'd say try 4lb of rye malt and see how you like it before upping the dose. 2lb rice hulls is plenty, IMO, but it depends on your mash tun. Mine is oversized and the grain bed is pretty shallow unless I'm making a big beer. I made a saison with 20% rye last weekend, without rice hulls, and fly sparged in 45 minutes with no issues; could have gone faster if in a hurry or feeling wasteful.

    p.s. Flaked rye can be interesting too, but try just the malt first.

    I use a tall water cooler type mash tun, usually it's nearly full to the top. I've actually had one sparge that was difficult, and that was without rye (it was a stout with oatmeal and some wheat). Thus, I think for me the rice hulls are very necessary.

    You definitely need the rice hulls with your mash tun.
