Brewed a second iteration of my hoppy patersbier. Same basic template as the last one - German Pilsner and Vienna malts, OG in the mid 40s, 30 IBU, Mangrove Jack's M31 yeast - but this time I took the opportunity to use up a load of odds and ends of vaguely citrussy hops - Olicana at ten minutes, Amarillo and First Gold in the whirlpool and I'm probably going to dry hop with some Lemondrop when the time comes.

Every homebrewer I follow on Twitter seemed to be brewing something today, I think the stockpiling instinct is kicking in...

    IPA today

    2row, Carafoam, caramalt
    Hopshot @ 90
    Magnum @ 10
Idaho 7 Hop Hash in WP

Trying a lot less hops on the hotside this time around. Thinking it’s just not worth it if I’m going to be adding a large DH.

DH will be I7 with a bit of Magnum.

Brewed my English Barleywine late yesterday. Missed my OG target because I forgot to adjust my efficiency lower for a higher gravity beer. Pitched yeast early this morning. First shot at the style, we'll see how it goes.

I've not DH with magnum. What aroma/flavors do you get from it?

First brew in over a year, first brew in the new house, and first brew outside yesterday. Extract IPA, just to get back in the swing of things. From turning the burner on to finishing cleaning, it only took 3 hours, including a 30min hop steep and an hour PBW soak! I could get used to this.

Only the second beer I’ve ever dry hopped with Magnum. I’m experimenting with a bunch of beers right now where I use pretty traditional hops on the hotside (magnum, nugget, warrior, columbus) and then dry hop with more modern hops and blend in a little of those hotside hops in the DH. A lot of these old school hops are really high in certain oils and thiols that could amplify or magnify certain aspects of the modern hops like Citra or Mosaic. Similar to what Trillium does with all their Street beers and a bunch of their other hoppy beers.

I have two beers in fermenters right now that are sitting on hops. One is a mostly Simcoe Pale ale, the other is a mostly Simcoe Black IPA. The difference being I blended in some Columbus and Magnum into the Black IPA dry hop and the hop character is very different. The one with some Magnum and Columbus is much more fruit forward than the Pale ale with just Simcoe.

Ive been using Nugget on the hotside for a while cause of its linalool content and honestly the stuff I’ve gotten recently smells amazing.

I have used nugget both on hot and DH. DH yields lean on taste and scent to me. Very nice hop.

Brewing a straight up classic American Pale Ale (though it's gluten free). Experimenting with a different enzyme/mash schedule.

    Warrior bittering, all Cascade. US-05.

Since working from home, decided to spend the last hour or so cleaning my brew kettle from all it's beer stone or whatever else. Took a bunch of bar keepers friend, magic erasers and steel wool... But it's finally looking like new again. Currently got it in a strong star-san solution to passivate. Was long overdue!

Transferring a Belgian Golden Strong onto 5 lbs frozen peaches (pureed) this afternoon. Wanted to go much higher on the fruit... but frozen fruit of all kinds was an early casualty of the run on the supermarkets around here. Brewing a WC Pale Ale tomorrow, going to use up a bunch of leftover hops.

Brewed a Helles Lager at a local brewery. (On topic because it's my homebrew recipe?) Just finished up, right after the governor announced closing of all non "life sustaining" businesses effective at 8:00 pm. Talk about "in before the lock."

Interestingly, beer *distributors* (i.e. wholesale beer stores) are on the okay to stay open list.

Did my final DH in a citra/galaxy NEIPA today. The past few years, galaxy has given off harsh flavors for me... so I’m DH at 50 degrees and under pressure for 36hrs. Kegging Saturday morning and hoping a decreased exposure time gives those great galaxy flavors/smells I remember from 2017

Reviewing my scoresheets from All American Homebrew comp. I entered a Brett beer that got 2nd in its category. Scored a 37.5. All it takes is one bad judge to bring ya down right??

Planning a brew day sometime soon. I have an excessive amount of tropical hops in freezer, so a pale ale is in order.

Also bottling a berliner weisse tomorrow night.

I’ve had great luck with Galaxy at around 58* for DH.

Galaxy is incredibly high in polyphenols (as are almost Southern Hemisphere hops). When brewers add all the high protein adjuncts to try to make beer hazy these also tend to keep even more of these polyphenols in suspension which is why Galaxy can come across as harsh. Cut out the high protein adjuncts and you’ll get a smoother beer when dry hopping with Galaxy (and don’t worry it will still be hazy).

DH IPA while saving yeast, cooling the Irish for bottleing Sunday.
Totally chlorinated all bottles, buckets fermenters and brewing tools. A real full tilt house cleaning.

Neighbor visited, at a socially acceptable distance, and inquired about trading beer for beef. Wild times, but seeing he has 40 head of beefers, well I said sure.
Other wondering if I'll go back into the veg buis.

    Just nuts.

    Brew on.

Brewed my 3rd version of the brown ale I’ve been tinkering with lately. Used Sabro hops this time, can I say WOW!! I think I love this hops aroma. I really do pick up the coconut smell in it. Using my Fermzilla for the first time as well. Trying to figure out how to use spudning valve and carb while fermenting then transfer to my keg for secondary. Gonna put 2lbs of toasted coconut in the keg also. We’ll see how it goes. Oh ya I posted a thread about washing yeast the other. It took off magically and was working away today when I pitched it. Smelled yummy too lol
