In the Rick Armon article, it is said one of the investors is a relative of the Pannini's owner. So I guess that's where the Pannini's thing got started.
I heard Panini's (even heard the same name of a Panini's franchise owner - that's the real kicker to me) from 3 different BK employees who said they heard it straight from the horse's mouth. Not saying anything other than there seems to be confusion even among the employees who were at the meeting when the news was broken.
