Anyone having issues with Brewtoad lately? I haven't been loving this new incarnation of Hopville, and now when I logged in today (first time in a few months), it only allows me to access 5 of my 21 stored recipes, calling them the newest though some are from 2010. When I click to view all, it brings me to a blank page.

Luckily I have printouts of most of them. Maybe it's time to move to Beersmith or something else.

Brewtoad sucks. Use a different calculator.

Hopville was better and easier to use.

That scenario is still possible with Beersmith...even though it is not internet based...they all want our money...repeatedly.

Losing my recipes has NOT been a problem on beersmith. Although I agree with the sentiment that anytime a computer program is supposedly "improved," you not only risk loss of all prior data / functionality, the "improvements" may well render the program useless beyond that point. I'm thinking everything from microsoft, every program they've ever wrote, for instance.

When I update beersmith (I think there's an update available, btw), I plan to try the update on a different computer that doesn't have any critical recipes saved on it BEFORE updating the computer with all my recipes on it, to make sure I don't "improve" myself right out of years worth of recipes.

I use beersmith. If I change computers, will I lose all of my information? Is there a way to migrate the info saved in beersmith on my computer to a new computer?

I don't know. I hadn't planned on doing the update with any sense of urgency. If you figure it out, do post what you've figured.

I have several computers with beersmith, but only one that is my "main" computer for beer. Truthfully, all (every single one, in fact) of my brewed recipes are online on my blog anyway. Just some that I haven't yet brewed are on beersmith but not online.

Ive moved it several times, all I do is copy the entire beersmith folder and paste it where I want it

Yes, the Brewtoad site has been majorly effed up since the update they did in mid-November. While I have not had any recipes go missing, the stats of existing recipes have been severely off since then.

For instance, I had a recipe that had an OG of 1.083 which inexplicably changed to 1.112! Issues seem to occur mostly while editing recipes, so beware. Also, some features have been eliminated while others have become more limited. Hopville was once a viable FREE alternative to Beersmith, but now it seems like even free may be too much to charge for this.

But wait, their business model for these "updates" and "improvements" was ... what?

Epilogue to the story - Brewtoad took a week to reply to my email asking for their help (okay it was over new years, so that's fine). They suggested using a different browser (in a roundabout way), and when I opened Brewtoad using Firefox or Chrome rather than IE9, the recipes were all there.

I think this thread should be retitled "MS lost my recipes"

Granted I've never used either. Do they have the ability to email recipes to yourself as a backup? If so you can just email yourself every time you do/update a recipe. That's how I handle iBrewmaster on my iPad. If emailing recipes is not an option, sorry for my drivel.

I use Promash. I think I'm the only person still using the damn software. It hasnt been updated in probably a decade, but it works for me.

No my there are many more that still use it. I won Beersmith as a praise for placing in a big comp, but have only dabbled with it.

I just got a new laptop and did this. Install BS on the new computer using the pass key code thingee from the old one. Your license permits installation on two pcs at once. Migrating the recipes should be pretty easy, like copying files to a flash drive, only I couldn't quite follow how recipe files were stored. My plan b was to make a bs cloud account, which allows 15 recipes to be stored at a time. Uploaded from one PC to the other, 15 at a time. There's got to be an easier way but I was frustrated that it wasn't obvious to me.
