I use brewersfriend.com and I love it so far. All of the predicted numbers are pretty much spot on .. Tons of tools like recipe scaling and water calculators .. even yeast pitching. I paid the 10.00 premium membership, its a great tool. I didnt like beer smith too much.

    Hi,
For BeerSmith 2 - all of the recipes and data is centralized in your Documents/BeerSmith2 directory by default. So backing up this single directory will catch all of your relevant data.

(Side note: if you use the "Change Data Directory" command to put the data somewhere else, then you need to back that one up instead)

    Brad

Of course It would be wise to backup you pc to an external drive and if your like me and the though of losing that, I also use amazon s3, with a nice archive program called fastglacier.
Back up about 40gig a month for 40cents @ month. yep no typo. The file with the recipes is tiny btw, that data is mostly pictures. Google drive works, if you trust them.

Microschmucks will always be on my "plan to beat their software programmers to a bloody pulp with a computer equipped with microsoft products" list, but there are other techies on my (rather long) list too. Latest travesty is digitech... you only get one chance when your processor suddenly start cycling through all the programs spontaneously for no reason during the middle of practice, digitech ON the list now.

One thing I can say for certain is that beersmith has never deleted or rearranged my recipes to places where they can no longer be found or accessed. So for NOW, Brad Smith is not on my techie hit-list. But I always have my pencil ready Brad, so don't go "updating" or "improving" anything too hastily...

I just built a new PC and installed BS onto it 2 days ago and had to debug how to get my recipes. All you need is the Recipe.bsmx file from your old machine (usually saves in the program files folder, but mine were located in "My Documents"). Start BS. Click file -> open and select that recipe.bsmx file. It will open to show you all of your recipes. Then you just copy and paste them into the BS window where your recipes SHOULD have been.

As my cloud solution was slow, I still have several files to move. I can explore this approach.

Brewtoad is awful, just truly awful. I wrote to them asking how many users find the brew log clunky piece of crap functionalty useful and got no reply (i was polite). Someone above hit the nail on the head- free is too high a price to use that site anymore. Hopville was WAY better.

When they did the migration from Hopville to Brewtoad, all my recipes, Extract and all grain were all changed in one way or another. So it was pretty much a complete loss, because I am not going to go through and try to recreate 30 plus recipes. I now use Beersmith at home and back it up weekly and I use the following free online sites when I am out and about an feel inspired MyBrewCo, Brewgr, Brewology 101, and Brewer Assistant. I also found Brew Target as a nice free alternative for home computer. They all have there quirks and may give you slightly different results, but the you will get a rough estimate from using them. As far as mobile apps go, I use Fermenticus Brew Log. It is real accurate for me.
