So like many, I was very curious to try the Pale Ale that beat out Zombie Dust (and The Weight) for the gold at GABF. And I have to admit, I was skeptical.

Went down to BrickStone and got myself a growler yesterday to try it straight from the source...and it's great. Really, really tasty. In a lot of ways, it tastes like a less intense Zombie Dust. Maybe a little less hoppy smell, and a little less fruity at the end. But similar overall in terms of how it starts and finishes. I just checked the ABV right now, and assumed it was a bit lower, because it drinks really easy.

All in all, I highly recommend fans of the Dust check this one out. It was no fluke victory - they're both great beers.

Now I need to try The Weight...

I had The Weight a couple weeks ago and thought it was an awesome beer. I also did the Zombie Dust comparison. Hoping to get back soon to try it again.

When I had the Weight back in June it was right after my first Zombie Dust tasting and thought the Weight was a superior beer...I was fresh off a keg of Oddside Citra, and felt that Zombie Dust was behind that as well.

as much as I like oddsides citra, it isn't quite as good as the dust imho. haven't had this weight beer you speak of :astonished:

Piece just put The Weight back on yesterday. I can't speak for the taste yet, but as far as names go The Weight >>>> Zombie Dust

I give the edge to Zombie Dust on name, because zombies.

Zombie Dust also cleans the floor with The Weights' non-existent packaging for the same reason.

But thanks for the head's up. I know where I'm going after work....

I found this thread and thought I would pick the conversation back up. Since 2012 Brickstone's Belgo APA won a gold medal at the GABF in 2013. Basically the same recipe as APA but with a different yeast strain. So these guys are legit.

I had the privilege of trying both of these at the restaurant. (took a 1/6 barrel of APA home with me as well). What I can say is that compared to Zombie Dust, APA is more of a hop assault. It blurs the line of what a pale ale, strong pale ale and ipa can be called. Zombie Dust has more malt backbone in my opinion. Still both score high in my book.

Brickstone is breaking ground this Spring on a new production facility, so hopefully look for them to blow up in the near future. Tom mentioned 16oz cans will be the goal eventually.

    Cheers!

A little off topic but Brickstone's Dark Secret (their 2013 Black Friday release) is fantastic. It's a barrel aged stout and it's BIG! Seek it out.

Brickstone just posted on FB that they are releasing 22oz bombers of APA and Belgo APA. Not sure the availability yet, but I would imagine Binnys in the burbs would be getting a bit.

    $7.49 a bottle, btw

The Brickstone while similar has half the flavor as ZD, not even close.

While I can admit Pipeworks is my favorite, I do drink other beers. Like my go to beer is always Daisy Cutter, and who doesn't love ZD. So I definitely need to try this from Brickstone since Brickstone is a lot easier for me to get.

I saw the APA on the shelves of AH Binnys last week, didnt check to see if it was a new batch or not, however it did have a new label that included a blurb about a GABF 2013 gold medal so I would assume it is relatively newer

I thought BA shuts down and the world collapses in on itself everytime an APA challenges zombie dust. Yet this thread has stayed civil. I don't understand.

Looking forward to trying Brickstone APA now.

ZD is overrated. Bought ZD just tge other day thinking maybe it was off the first time but no. The APA is way better.

totally agree, APA is a good beer but it doesn't reach the level of zombie dust
