My friend is going to Belgium in the next few weeks and I have asked him to bring back a few Cantillon bottles for me. He inquired about the customs laws on doing this? Does anyone have any knowledge or experience on what is allowed to come back for personal consumption?
I brought back ten 750's and a handful of 375's last time I went to Belgium and had absolutely no issue. If you get asked to pay the customs duty, it is miniscule(something like 19 cents/liter). As long as the bags are not overweight and the bottles are well protected, your friend should have no issue.
yes well we bought back suitcase full NP. Pack it well, you have no issue, just declare it on the customs form. The law is kind of vague on the amount of beer. More limited on booze as the tax thing is "maybe" different I do not know but I never cared or had an issue in over 15 years.
This. The last time I flew from Belgium I brought 42 750s back with me...in three gorilla boxes. No customs issues at all...just had to pay excess baggage. Just have them packed to withstand a 2-story drop. No worries.
That's not entirely true. You're allowed to bring back enough for "personal consumption". Realistically you're fine with anything you can carry, though you may be assessed a tiny duty on anything over a case. You couldn't, for example, import an entire palette by yourself though. The only thing you really need to know is to pack well, as bags do take a beating and bottles can clang together and break easily. Also, if you're transferring in the US, do expect TSA to **** your bag. Some workers are better than others about putting the bottles back safely, so make it as easy as possible for them with loads of bubble wrap.
