I hae some family members going to Germany next year. I'm looking for some suggestions of some beer to jab them bring back. I can only think of having them bring back some cantillon. Never had it and it also has a high trade value for here in southern CA. Any other ideas or should I scrap it all together?

Any other ideas about German beer besides Cantillon?

Not in Germany, he can't. Good Lord, man. You can get Cantillon here. How about a selection of some of the best of the 1,000s of beers from the world's greatest brewing nation as a consolation? This place is so insane sometimes....

I know my roommate went to Belgium to get me some, and he failed. Said he saw it, but didnt want to deal with shipping and/or customs.

If you go to Belgium, it's extraordinarily easy to find. Most any trip to Belgium will take you through Brussels, and likely through the very train station you can exit to walk to Cantillon. The place isn't exactly a secret these days....

Seems like it. I, myself, used to have to rent a car to drive from Germany to Belgium and load up on crates of Cantillon, Rodenbach Alexander, and Orval to take back with me back in the day.

I went to Germany and didn't miss Cantillon. German beer is so good the first time you have it, you'll temporarily forget about anything else.

My next trip, however, will take me west across the border.

Where did you get it and how much? And to the others what other suggestions then? I'm slowly expanding from southern CA breweries.

You should probably have them pick up some Westy 12 for you too, as long as you're making them cross a border to get beer for you.

Now that you mention it, I guess to get the full U.S. craft beer culture effect he should have a third-party buy it in Germany in an overpriced bottle shop, then he should store it in a "cellar" (read: closet) for a few years, ask BAs when to open it, split it up into 2 oz. samples, and then brag about -- and post pictures of -- the tasting online.

Sorry for the initial hostility (and for you getting caught in the subsequent crossfire). Nothing personal. It seems like your question is sincere, so I guess I have two questions: 1. Where in Germany will they be? 2. Are you interested in German beer? As stated, you're very unlikely to find Cantillon anywhere in Germany.

I guess I should have asked what can be brought back or sent that someone can only get over there. They will be in Berlin for the main part of the time other them that not totally sure. It's not until march of next year so just wanted to get a head start. Also I should have posted in the Germany forum too. I do know that cantillon and most of the Trappist stuff is in Brussels and around there but was just curious if it was cheaper to buy there and bring back here. Summing up what is some awesome stuff that someone can only get over there?
