I will be traveling to Bristol this May. I was wondering what are some of the good places to sample beers and what beers would people recommend I try. Also, I would like to bring back a few bottles if possible, maybe some barleywine or others than can age well, if anyone could suggest some. I wont have access to a car so anything within walking distance or public transport would be best.

    Thanks everyone !

Bristol has become excellent for beer. King St has recently become the beer street - Beer Emporium (my favourite), Small Bar, Royal Navy Volunteer.

Elsewhere the Three Tuns (Arbor Brewery), Bag O Nails (great atmosphere, cats & rules) and Grain Barge (Bristol Beer Factory, floating bar with stunning views - recommended to eat) are all close together. Crofters Rights (same 'chain' as Euston Tap), Beerd (Bath Ales), Colston Yard (Butcombe) and Barley Mow (Bristol Beer Factory) are all recommended. There's also a Brewdog bar but recommend the others first...

Breweries - Wild Beer Co (innovative, particularly sours but also barley wines), Bristol Beer Factory (milk stout and hoppy pale ales), Arbor (continually changing range), Wiper and True (newish brewery), Moor Beer (great unfined pale and hoppy cask ales, if you see bottled Old Freddy Walker snap it up), Bath Ales (more traditional British cask ales), Butcombe (also traditional).

Hope that helps (hope I haven't missed anything).

Great, thanks ! Looking at Google Maps, I should be staying within 500 meters of King Street. I'll make sure to sample a few

May should be a good time to find cask mild, that month is when it's widely available.

Moor Fusion is worth grabbing if you see it. BA old ale that's produced in very limited numbers but isn't a hype beer so might still be around.
