There's more than enough decent ales and porters  across the uk at the moment, but good lagers are certainly harder to some by, so I thought a thread in which the better (and worse) ones could be mentioned might be a decent idea

I picked up a few bottles of scottish ones this morning when at the shops, will hopefully get some more over the coming weeks to try. Although I've had these before independently on tap, trying them next to each other might be a bit more usefull

    Drygate Bearface
    Brewdog This is lager
    I&G lager

From aldi (big spender eh  )

Anyone else up for a lageroff?

Wrexham Lager is a decent one - historic too, it's a revival of what used to be brewed for White Star Lines

I've never seen that but I might check it out if I can. Maybe might have more luck next time I'm down in Wales

Just having the I&G lager - not particularly good but at least I don't find it offensive like a lot of their oaked beers

Onto the bearface now, it's not bad. A step up from the I&G. There's a decent bit of zesty hops in aroma and taste. Plus it's a bit drier which I like

I'll of course need to get a bottle of Tennents to set the bar

A rather low bar admittedly

I spent over an hour drinking that beer and it improved as it warmed and went well with my simple cheese+bread+ salad supper.

Now onto the brewpups This. Is. Lager. . Have drunk this in spoons before when it was ice cold and was a bit forgettable. Same again for the bottle, it's better than the I&G but lags behind the Drygate. Little aroma, little flavour, bitterness and dryness are decent

I like the Drygate lager, pity it gets overshadowed by other beers. Howling Hops pilsner is interesting but I don’t know if they bottle it. For my money Fourpure Pils is the best lager made in Britain. Schiehallion is right up there too: I tend to forget how good it is but every time I have it it’s great. Thornbridge Bayern tastes, well, like lager in Bavaria: gorgeous.

I was really impressed with the Bayern too. Mostly I don't normally bother with UK brewed Lager, seeing as there's normally good German stuff in bottle shops, plus I have low standards for Lager so in the summer I was happy with Budvar cans and big Kingfisher bottles in the 3 for a fiver deal from sainsbobs.

I mostly drink ales when visiting the UK for obvious reasons, but had a few Samuel Smith Organic Lagers on tap in Dalston which were pretty drinkable, if still far from the good German ones.

My quest continues, this time I went to M&S for a weekly shop and picked up

    Harviestoun Schiehallion
    Fourpure Pils
    Meantime London Lager
M&S Scottish lager - Harviestoun. Will be interesting to see how it compares to Schiehallion
M&S Five Hop Lager - Hogsback
M&S Ashbrook Red Lager - Freedom

All but the Scottish lager (should they not call this Macbeth lager  ) are in 330ml bottles . Considering the food section of M&S is pretty small compared to the likes of Tosco, ASDA, Sainsburys etc it's a pretty decent effort they make in terms of range

As expected, Schiehallion was a fair bit better than the M&S offering. It's leading the pack at the moment

I might delve into the harder to get (for me) ones later on

HAd four more tonight, two M&S own brand ones and the meantime and fourpure

As it stands the ratings are: and I decided to include the others I've bothered to remember to rate in the past, although I will rerate them again when I bump into them for the purpose of this thread. Eg, as good as that pint of St Mungo was, it was from when i first started rating on this site, so it's a bit high. But I do actually remember that pint and it was absolutely banging, but I haven't had as good a St mungo as that one before or after it. I'll try the bottle though, which is what the purpose of the thread is. The Tempest one was excellent, I think it was just a bit too new world hoppy so I rated it a bit lower

Morrisons were not good for a selection, they have Bearface, Schiehallion, Ceasar Augustus, I&G but that's it apart from Tennents super. And no, I'm not going to bother with a fourpack of that pish. No English lagers at all

From ASDA I picked up Belhaven Craft Pilsner, Ceasar Augustus and they were sold out of Coulls from Black Wolf. Probably for the best if ther rest of their beers are anything to go by. I also refrained from buying Tennents Black which I assume is rebadged export, as it was six pack only and I don't really want six of them  . Same again, no english lagers

So neither Morrisons of ASDA are much use by the looks of things.

The pitiful selection of decent german beers is also evident

I just rated the two beers I bought, Belhaven came in at 3.06 so marginally ahead of I&G. However it is less lager like imo, I'd have thought it a fairly average bitter if I'd drank it blind

Ceasar Augustus is in second place, really fresh bottle and it's still as an enjoyable drink as it ever has been. Possible a bit too new world hoppy in aroma and light in body though enjoyable as it is.

A roaring success of a thread I'm sure you'll all agree

    Two more tonight, both Scottish

Paolozzi from Edinburgh Beer Factory - 5.2% . So-so, inoffensive, won't be buying again
Arctic Swell - Cromarty, a vienna lager. I was rather hopeful for this one and although it's got a nice interesting peppery note from the hops it doesn't satisfy me enough

    The search continues

Thanks Hanglow, I am following it keenly. Big lager fan (see picture) and my dream is to have a good British lager:

    - Widely available in supermarkets
    - 500ml bottle (or can)
    - £2 price point
