I'm off to Brno next month.
Last time I visited, 8 years ago, it had good beer options: Pegas, Poutnik, Dalesice (top notch beer), Cerna Hora, Policka, tank PU.
By all accounts, the line up is now even better: a few Chotebor places, and other small regionals. Even some "craft beer" places!

Anyone paid a visit recently and have recommendations?
What about day trips out from Brno?

Let me know if you find anything interesting in Brno. I might make a trip up there soon.

    Hey Mike, hey everyone.

Yeah, Brno is rocking. It's small enough to be really easily negotiated via foot or public transportation, but big enough to get a bunch of stuff going on. Plus the architecture is outrageously cool.

I'm a fan of what the guys from Lucky Bastard are trying to do. Good stuff, brewed with a lot of heart, and they know where they're going. Very much craft beer.

There are a bunch of new pubs and breweries, as you know. I didn't think Lišeňský Pivovar was really worth the trouble it took to get out there on my visit, but I've enjoyed their beers elsewhere. Might be worth your time.

I enjoyed Magistr on my visits, a lot — their pale lagers were really spot-on, really feeling like they should be in the top 10% for Czech Republic when I was there. I've heard other people say they didn't have such a good experience. Whatever: they were fine — even excellent — when I tried them. Good food, too. Your mileage may vary.

Beer bars: for a small city, Brno feels like it definitely has more variety in the city center than Prague does — in the Old Town, you can see a lot of "weird" Czech beers, like Strakonice and Poutník, that are very hard to find in central Prague. The Ochutnávková pivnice was impressive when I tried it. I get mixed reviews from people I respect about Zelená Kočka Pivárium. But what the hay? You can walk 1 minute to another four bars. Pegas is fine, still.

And yes, Brno is definitely not Pilsen. But U Bláhovky is one of the best Pilsner Urquell bars in the country.

    Enjoy.

I had a good trip. Brno is a great beer destination. My trip even coincided with a beer fest in the town square (plastic cups only, though).
There are quite a few multi-tap bars, where a "craft beer" enthusiast could find some rareties, I expect .
But more rewarding is the wide abundance of local brews: Policka, Chotebor, Harrach, Poutnik, Dalesice. Even in cheap neighbourhood bars. No Gambrinus signs anywhere!
Even a trip to Veveri, the "party" area turned up some superbly-tapped beers.

Next time you are in Prague, jump on the coach at Florenc. They go every 30 mins.

Ok, now I'm pretty sure that I will head up there in mid November. Are there any specific non-beer related things I should check out? It would be a group of four of us and we like doing outdoorsy things. I know it will be cold for a hike, but we could manage.

There are some famous cave systems near Blansko, on the outskirts of Brno. It's a big hiking/outdoor area.
Also, I got the tram up to Brno dam, a lake system with walking trails. Takes about 15-20 mins. In good weather I think it is also a party area, with quite a few beer outlets and places to eat. I had a superb Dalesice polotmavy at one of the joints.
Post on the TripAdvisor Brno forum, and you will get more info. on this stuff from locals.

It looks like I will be there on October 27th. I'll probably check out Pegas and Ochutnávková pivnice. Thanks for the tips, guys!

I'll be coming up from Austria by bike and I might extend the trip another day. Does anyone have a suggestion for a stop after Brno? Something preferably within 100k from Brno. I've already been to Olomouc.

So I biked up there and visited Pegas and Ochutnávková pivnice on your recommendations. It was a nice trip! Thanks for the tips!

If any of you find yourself in this area, you should also check out Pivnice U Šneka in Znojmo and the Mamut pub 'U Chlupatého slona' in Mikulov. There is also a nice beer store in Mikulov and one in Brno. Sadly though the one in Brno displays a lot of it's stock of beers in the window, so they are in direct sunlight. Luckily this is not the case with their local unpasteurized beers. Those are all stored in refrigerators. The shop in Mikulov also keeps it's beers in refrigerators.
