On a previous trip to NYC we stayed in Brooklyn near 4th and Union. We really enjoyed the 4th Ave Pub. This time we are staying in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn. Ca anyone suggest some good beer spots there and can 4th Ave Pub be easily reached from Williamsburg? I believe the closest subway to 4th Pub is Atlantic, the closest subway to where we are staying is on the G line. Am I in business?
Well, getting from north Brooklyn (Williamsburg) to south-ish Brooklyn (Park Slope) can be a bit tricky. If the weather is nice, your cheapest method is to take the G down to Fulton st and walk for about 10 mins to 4th Ave Pub (about .5 miles). Worth the trip - as you clearly already know, 4th Ave Pub is fantastic. And it's near a couple other great spots - Mission Dolores and Pacific Standard both within a few blocks, and Bierkraft a short walk away (crazy expensive beer store/bar, but selection is great and they make killer sandwiches). That said, if you're already in Williamsburg you have plenty of great options. Spuyten Duyvil is my personal favorite in the area - they generally have some great lambics/gueuzes by the bottle (2009 Lou Pepe for $55 last time I was there - pricy in absolute terms, but actually better than what I've seen at any other bar/restaurant) as well as a very well curated small tap selection (6 lines). For a German beer bar in a very unique setting, I recommend Loreley. It's basically under the BQE, which while sounding unappealing, makes for a very cool urban feel. Plus, great brats, fresh beers, and a good vibe. Iona - decent beer, and my favorite back yard in all of Brooklyn. Good Co. - beer is fine, but it's my 2nd favorite back yard and they have ping pong (I think Iona may also, but more space at Good Co.). DBA - solid selection. Near Brooklyn Brewery. Barcade - lots of great beer, extensive tap selection, and tons of vintage arcade machines. It can be a fun bar, but also gets insanely packed. Try it earlier in the evening/day.
yeah G is the way to go 4th ave pub but it sometimes it can take forever. I'll second the previous bar suggestions. Also brouwerij lane is in greenpoint and has a great selection and take out bottles. Mugs Alehouse in Williamsburg has a great list too.
Warning: the G train is the worst train. I went to Radegast Biergarten last time I was in Williamsburg, and had a really good time. The setup is a little odd, service-wise, but the selection is pretty decent, and if you find something you like on draft, you can get a liter of it.
If you make it back over to Park Slope, I recommend The Double Windsor. I've scored Hill Farmstead IPAs on three different occasions. Cash only, so bring green with you.
Sneers, can you elaborate on why G train is the worst? I don't want to be exposing my girlfriend nor myself to the Bed-Stuy hood if that's the reason. is walking an option? We walk forever if it's not raining.
Other bars I have enjoyed visiting in Williamsburg are lucky dog, the levee, mugs ale house and berry park. Lucky Dog (not to be confused with the dog grooming store) has a nice outdoor area where you almost feel like you could be drinking in your friend's backyard. Mugs has a great beer list and descent food. Berry Park is German style and has a huge rooftop bar and seating area.
The G train is just known for not being very frequent, that's all. Check the mta.info website ahead of time to see if it's running regularly and you should be fine. It's about a 3 to 3.5 mile walk from Williamsburg to Park Slope, if it's a nice day I'd recommend walking to Park Slope and taking a cab or the G train back. 4th Ave Pub, Pacific Standard and Mission Dolores are all within a few blocks of each other on 4th Ave and you can catch the G at 4th Ave and 9th Street, so that's a good spot to be in. Not the prettiest area, but some of the best bars.
Thanks for the tip Paul and others. I agree that part of 4th avenue does not look too good but we never saw any shady happenings nor did I ever feel like I had to be on alert. We never went to Mission Dolores and briefly went in to Pacific Standard. The latter insists or at least on that day on playing rap so off we went to 4th Avenue and never looked back. Really enjoyed that place.
