I'm fine with this. Would be nice to see Sixpoint finally forced to be more transparent about the fact that they contract brew out of Memphis. Brooklyn should be careful though. They really should change their name to Utica Brewery.

At least Brooklyn does acknowledge the Utica brewery on the bottles unlike sixpoint. Brooklyn blast is bottled in Williamsburg, I think they recently added a bottling line.

I was curious to see how Sixpoint is using the term “BKLYN” and apparently it is for a beer called BKLYN Bitter which was a collaborative brew with Adnams: http://adnams.co.uk/about/news/beer...lyn-a-new-collaboration-beer-for-wetherspoon/

I have posted a number of times on BA my disappointment that Sixpoint does not openly and transparently label on their cans that the beer was brewed at City Brewing in Memphis, TN. Needless to say but despite my entreaties there has been no change to the labeling on the can.

    Cheers!

Yeah I think all their large format bottles are bottled in Brooklyn.

Granted this suit is against the Mad Scientist division of Sixpoint and they do brew in Brooklyn.

I think they are one in the same - if you look on the right the defendant is listed as "Mad Scientists Brewing Partners LLC DBA Sixpoint Craft Ales." DBA = doing business as. So the technical company name for Sixpoint is Mad Scientists Brewing Partners LLC.

Oh they are the same - I'm just saying the Mad Scientist beers are brewed at the Sixpoint Brooklyn location, not in TN.

Yea, true. Sixpoint filed for this trademark way back in 2011 and I've never even heard of the beer in question - I wonder why they are waiting to file now? Maybe they're just protecting their trademark so they don't risk losing it. Seems strange.

What exactly defines the Sixpoint beers that are "Mad Scientist beers"?

Any Sixpoint beer that is available in cans is brewed at City Brewing in Memphis, TN.

    Cheers!

They have some small batch, draft-only beers that show up around NYC. Not sure if they really make it outside the city or what, but they are all brewed in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

But they use the term "Mad Scientists" to market their canned beers which are brewed and packaged at City Brewing in Memphis, TN. You can clearly read "Mad Scientists" on the packaging of Sixpoint Jammer below:

Right, they refer to themselves as "mad scientists" all over the place, but we're talking about the "Mad Scientists Series." See here: http://sixpoint.com/beers/mad-scientists. I also think their Limited Draft Series is brewed in Brooklyn.

You might be discussing “series” but I am discussing to the petition which lists:

    “Mad Scientists Brewing Partners LLC

    40 Van **** Street

    Brooklyn, NY 11231

    UNITED STATES”

    No mention of “series” above.

    Cheers!

Yea I know, I never said anything about the lawsuit, I was just responding to your question asking what a Mad Scientist beer was.

I'm not really sure what you're getting at though? The trademark specifically relates to one beer they made, per the link you posted above, which I don't recall ever getting canned anyway. I'm pretty sure they don't use BKLYN on any of their cans. Instead, the cans (deceptively) say "Brewed and canned by Sixpoint Brewery, Brooklyn, New York."

I should say that I totally agree with you regarding Sixpoint's lack of transparency in brewing location. I just think that issue has nothing really to do with the trademark dispute here.

That was just a secondary comment I made since it was brought up in a prior post: "Would be nice to see Sixpoint finally forced to be more transparent about the fact that they contract brew out of Memphis."

    Cheers!

I can see why Sixpoint tries so hard to be oblique about where there beer comes from. I'm sure they would much rather people think they brew all their beers out of Brooklyn for the "coolness" factor that is Brooklyn.

All these lawsuits are boring me.

Has anyone reached out to @Sixpoint for Shane's take? Might just get a "we can't comment on pending litigation", but can't hurt to ask. I imagine this is not news to them. I doubt Brooklyn filed suit without first discussing the issue with Sixpoint. Always unfortunate when it has to go to litigation :/.

With regards to Brooklyn vs. Sixpoint's contract brewing, I'm with @ecpho. In my experience (limited though it may be) Brooklyn has not tried to hide their relationship with Matt brewing in Utica, while Sixpoint seems to dodge questions around this issue. As far as Brooklyn's Williamsburg/Utica split, my understanding was they brew/bottle for large format releases and their associated kegs (i.e. kegs of large format beers like local 1) in Williamsburg; and brew bottle all 12oz bottle/cans/associated kegs in Utica.

According to this blog post 12oz Blast is bottled in Williamsburg, so I guess not just large format:
