Just saw a display of this at Beers of the World the other day, didn't know Brooklyn made this. I am getting ready to drink the style after a few months of Porters but because I have never been a big Irish Dry Stout guy, I'm wondering how this one measures up to Guinness Extra Stout in bottles. I am not a fan of Guinness Draught but the ES in bottles tastes pretty good to me. I want to avoid a version of this style which is just another coffee/ chocolate dark ale. Also, if there are any other American made Irish Stouts, I'd love for some recommendations.

The place I go to sells it for $2 a bottle, it's not an expensive beer. Why not just buy a bottle & if you don't like it, no big loss?

Personally I found that browsing through the reviews (especially those done by the Top Reviewers) gave me a pretty clear picture of what to expect from this beer.

For the record, the Extra Stout is absolutely nothing compared to Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. It can be a pain to find (and expensive), but if I can get it in rural Maine, elsewhere shouldn't be too difficult.

But seriously though. Compared to FES, ES tastes like pig vomit. I highly recomend it! (the Foreign Extra... Not pig vomit)

So in my house I am the only one that really digs stouts. However, my dad and brother dig Guinness, and my dad loves Brooklyn Lager. Is their Irish Dry Stout worth grabbing? I have seen it around for about 8-9 for a sixer, and I thought it would be something cool to split with them. If not Guinness always works for me.

Its a nice stout that's definitely worth the price. I prefer it on Nitro at a bar myself.

Would be very good on Nitro but is definitely worth picking up and splitting with your family.

Very good sessionable stout. The finish is dry as expected.

There was another thread asking this same question. It's not an expensive beer, I'm not sure why someone would balk at getting it.

had one last night at dinner. it was pleasant and easy to drink but as I feared it had too much Coffee and Chocolate in the taste profile. It wasn't bad, it just lacked character. If you want an Irish Dry Stout stick with Guinness Extra Stout.

Foreign Extra Stout isn't a Dry Irish Stout. It's basically a London Stout (but brewed in Ireland) which began life as West India Porter.

Seriously? Are you sure you really got the Extra Stout and not the Draught in Bottles? Because when the FES first became available here in the U.S. I tried it alongside the ES and to tell the truth, I didn't notice a huge difference. It actually made me wonder which beer would survive on shelves because I don't think the average ticker could really discern a difference.

Now, if you mean the difference in character between the Draught and the FES, yes -- that's significant. But I still wouldn't call it something as disgusting as you have.

(and yeah, I noticed that this thread was revived and that post is almost a year old, but it really made me shake my head -- huh, GassyGunslinger last seen August 2013.)

I got a sixer a few weeks ago, and pretty much thought the same thing (I guess the beer is pretty consistent between 2013 and 2014 )- Guinness Extra Stout isn't my favorite beer of that style, but I would still take it over the Brooklyn, as pleasant as the Brooklyn is.

I found it pretty consistent with Murphy's and Beamish...definitely doesn't have the tart zing of Guinness Extra Stout.
