I had one of these yesterday to end a session and I thought it was quite good. When I read the reviews and comments here, there are comments to the effect that it might be better with age.

The bottle I has noted a "born-on" date of 2011; http://brooklynbrewery.com says it's available Nov-Feb; so either the brewery or the distributor held on to it for a while.

Is this normal for this beer, or does it normally get to the customer fresh?

I bought a 6 pack of Monster (before they changed to 4 packs) last year that had a born on date of 2007, so I'm thinking somebody's holding on to a few cases of each vintage before releasing them to the world.

There seems to be a lot of Monster left over this year, I think the distributer here probably still has some. Its been stocked in a supermarket here for a while, they keep restocking it. I dont recall there being near this much in previous years, but couldnt tell for certain. But it usually comes out in Nov/Dec so its "fresh" when you get it then, and I would say thats the normal time to buy it.

I've just not had much chance to experience barleywine (style) beers. I'm guessing anything can happen in the chain of custody. I'll be looking for a chance to grab one or two that have a bit more age on them.

It doesn't hold up too well after about year 6 or 7. If you're finding 2006 and 2007, buy them to drink, not to cellar.

As we all know aging is a subjective thing… I prefer Brooklyn Monster Ale with about 2 ½ to 3 ½ years of aging. I find it is not as hot and is more blended and smoother.

2009 was still on the shelves when 2011 hit here.

I had one last week that was a year old and it was outrageous. I am going to snag a case that has been sitting for a little less than a year; drink 3/4ths and age the other 1/4.
