Brown Ales (2025)

Brown ales are becoming more common here in Ireland. Though we sadly lost St Mel’s brown ale from Longford town when the brewery shut down, quite a pity as it was lovely and malt dominated.

 

Is cask ale common in Ireland?

 

My go to beer throughout the late 80s and early 90s until I started homebrewing my own. I still love it.

 

When I'm in New Mexico the best is Santa Fe Brewing's Nut Brown Ale, in France I drink Pelforth Brune.

 

I love that beer.

I'm curious, why did you boycott Smutty?

 

I rarely buy browns, am occasional one when I see singles.....

 

I will be in Orlando in July. May do a day trip to Tampa Bay or just try to find some cans.

 

Real Ale Brewhouse Brown...this has been one of my favorites since I move to Houston about 20 years ago now. Though, it has all but vanished around me. Every once in a while, I can find a six pack...but there is a bar downtown that always has it. Captain Foxheart's Bad News Bar.

Plenty of chocolate malts, toasted and baked bread, light lingering earthy bitterness. Yep, exactly what I want with the style.

Started this new book...Making Skeletons Dance...opening lines...

"There's somebody whose refuge is a pub like this, neither filthy nor spotless, but the sort of place where a passer-by does not stay long. Battered creaky chairs, dust coated wooden paneling, a slot machine. For somebody, refuge means a bar counter, subdued conversation, light music, worldly-wise glances from bronzed faces. Um, is this literally about me bar hopping ?
