No, I haven't given that one a whirl yet. It just came to town this week and it's been on my radar. Have to say, I have/had the same trepidation - a big, sweet, unbalanced mess, but you're the fifth or sixth person who has said it's actually a nicely balanced, pretty good brown ale. Gonna pick up a sixer this week.

BJ's Nutty Brewnette used to be good. Haven't had it in years.
Wild Heaven's Ode to Mercy is stronger than usual but pretty damned good.
DFH Indian Brown is a fave.
As previously mentioned, Bell's is very solid.

Never saw the list - I just keep track of what I drink in alpha order. Probably a disorder of some sort.

Local breweries can do amazin' things with browns. Had a Chocolate Hazelnut Brown at Big Ugly this past Halloween... tasted like a Russell Stover chocolate.

My personal favorite is Brau Brothers Ring Neck Braun Ale. I think they're Minnesota only, but I consider it one of the lesser known gems our state has to offer.

Hotbox from Perrin is phenomenal. Tried it for the first time the other night,(now that Perrin is out everywhere here) and I see myself consuming a lot of this in the future.

I actually prefer them to be more like Tumbler...a little more roasty/dry/hoppy, and without the copious levels of caramel/vanilla/ and other sweet notes.

But i think there are far more examples of the sweeter ones and people seem to like the sweet variety quite well.

Brown ales are one of the most underappreciated styles imo. I freaking love them and each time fall comes around I'm thinking "brown ale season"

Check out CCB Maduro, Avery Ellie's Best Brown, Smuttynose Old Brown Dog, Sam Smith Nut Brown, SN Tumbler, and Sixpoint Brownstone. DFH Indian Brown Ale's a bit different but also worthy.

I love brown ales and used to buy the hell out of Tommyknocker Imperial. Haven't seen it in quite some time though.

I too think it's a great brown ale. But we're supposed to be put off by the label. I think it's sorta like Smuckers: with a name that bad (or art that far-out), it has to be good...

But it's so easy to trade for. It's falling off the shelves in Florida at 9 or so a 6 pack!

Palo Santo by DFH is also nice and DFH sees pretty good distro!

Was really taken and surprised by Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale. Hit and miss with brown ales for me, but I really enjoyed this one

I like brown ales to some degree, but some of them are too sweet for me. Does anyone know of any brown ales that are more dry? Or hoppy?
