For me, it's CCB Maduro or DFH Palo Santo.

I agree with Fat Squirrel. It really is a very nice example of the style. It makes a great fall seasonal, but I wish they had left it one of their year round flagship beers. Now and then I like to take a break from being a hop head and have something sweet and nutty regardless of the season.

I would recommend home brewing this style, you can adjust the hops to suit your tastes. I don't think you will find too many commercial varieties of this beer on the shelves. Of course you can trade for it. But it's a fun forgiving style to make. It actually drinks good in three weeks and at the four week mark is a thing of beauty.

Of course if you keg the beer you can have it in as little as two weeks.

Bell's is ok, but I prefer the maltier browns. Smuttynose Old Brown Dog and Legend Brown Ale are my favorites.

Another vote for DFH Indian Brown for a less sweet/more malty taste and don't forget about Smuttynose Old Brown Dog Ale which gets a 97 from the the bros'......My two faves.

One of my favorites too, but unfortunately upslope doesn't have very wide distribution.

I think.English porters are very similar to browns.

    Ex: yards general Washington porter.

I had Foley Brothers Maple Brown ale tonight. It was one of the best brown ales I've had.

Hardly if any mention of Rogue Hazelnut Brown on this post? It is available most anywhere, unlike many of the regional breweries recommended here (Cigar City is probably not available in the poster's state of IL). It was the cat's meow on BA a few years ago and is a fine example of the style. Maybe it's just assumed that everyone has tried this one already...

I'm not a big fan of Browns admittedly. For example it seems like everyone loves moose drool, me being from MT I think it's horrible. the one I can drink no problem is Shmaltz nut brown.

Yeah, this is really good. The Hotbox coffee adds a really nice dimension to the toffee and nut flavors.
