I'm going to So-Cal, specifically to go to the Bruery for my first time as an RS member on Sunday. Staying Sunday night, leaving Monday to head back up north. (this will be after attending FWIBF on Saturday. Would it be worth my time to go by Monday morning as well for anything SMM? What time does anything SMM happen on Mondays?

    Hey guys,

First off, thank you for bringing the issue to our attention! As promised, here's an update regarding the recent reports of soured 2014 Mash and Grind.

We did two packaging runs of 2014 Mash and Grind. One was stable; the other was unfortunately flagged in our lab for microbial instability. We intended to use the stable blend to fulfill Society orders and serve the unstable bottles only in house so that we could frequently check in on the beer and stop service immediately if the beer started to turn. Sometime in early March these cases got mixed in with the clean/stable beer slated for Society Member fulfillment in early March.

We just sent an email to members who may be affected by this mixup, with information about credits. Sorry for any inconvenience or unpleasant beer experience.

    Cheers,
    Matt Olesh

    Mash & Grind
Potential Issue & Credit for Blend #165

    Dear Society Member,

Last year we brought back one of our favorite barrel aged beers - Mash and Grind. This beer was packaged in two separate runs. The first part (blend #165, with packaging date of 9/8/14) passed our sensory analysis, but failed micro screening in our lab. The second part of the run (blend #183, packaged 10/27/14) passed both sensory analysis and micro screening. Our intention was to fulfill Society allocations entirely with bottles from blend #183. We kept bottles of blend #165 refrigerated to slow the bacteria growth and planned to only serve those bottles in our Tasting Room. This way, we would be able to keep tabs on the beer and if the beer started to show any signs of bacteria growth, we'd stop serving immediately and dispose of any remaining bottles.

Unfortunately, sometime in early March, bottles of #165 were mistakenly used to fulfill Society allocations, which resulted in some of our Society Members receiving bottles that were infected and not intended to be released. At this time, we think the scope of this problem seems to be pretty limited. But, since we can't tell who received which bottles of this beer, we are contacting everyone who purchased the 2014 release of Mash and Grind, either in the initial allocation in 2014, or in the archive release earlier this year, and picked up their beer after March 2, 2015.

We know this sucks. We're not proud of sending bottles out that we know to be flawed. We had a plan set in place to avoid this, but somewhere along the way, a batch number was overlooked. Simply put, we messed up.

    OK... So, what now?

First, check your bottles of Mash and Grind. Locate the laser etching on the bottle. It will be on the glass somewhere above the label. The first number is the packaging run, followed by the packaging date. If you have bottles labeled #183, with a packaging date of 10/27/14 there is no need to worry! The beer is fine. If you haven't already done so, enjoy!

If you have bottles of #165, with a packaging date of 9/8/14, there is a chance that your bottle(s) may be sour and we'd like to offer you a TheBrueryStore.com credit as reimbursement. Please read below, then contact [email protected] with the requested information.

    • A photo of the unopened bottle(s), clearly showing the laser etching on the side, just above the label.

    • Order number(s) of respective TheBrueryStore.com purchase(s).

    • All credit requests must be submitted prior to August 31, 2015 - no late requests will be acknowledged.

    • Store credit will be issued beginning July 1, 2015. If you do not receive your credit via email by July 10,2015, please contact the Society desk.

    • Credit requests must be submitted by the original customer.

    • Store credit will only be issued to the original customer.

    • Store credit is only available to use on TheBrueryStore.com - not The Bruery Tasting Room.

If you have already opened a sour bottle, and the bottle is no longer available, please contact our Society desk at [email protected]. Please include the date you opened the bottle and your order #, so we can look into the matter further.

If you have not yet picked up your Mash and Grind purchase (from the March 2015 archive release), all remaining fulfillment will be from blend #183.

If you have any other specific questions or concerns that we were unable to cover, please feel free to let us know what's on your mind. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of The Bruery.

    Cheers,

    The folks at The Bruery

Good for them. I sent them an email, one bottle was opened and the other 2 are not. My opened one was clearly infected. Glad they own up to it. Good customer service.

They were in our welcome book too if I remember correctly. I do find them quite odd. Especially when the dudes wallet was stolen. I'm like, are they trying to say beer snobs are thieves? I'm not sure where they are going with this.

Well from the backlash they get from a bad batch of beer, beer snobs are definitely assholes, so thief isn't that far of a step really.

Aww man. I have one of these infected bottles, but I'm not the original customer. Wish I could just walk into the fulfillment center and trade it for a non-infected bottle.

I assumed it was some strange way of saying "Hey, drink our beers instead of going to Belgium", but the last one they posted has a different tone.

    Edit - Yep, I put e-mail 3 times in 2 sentences. Crap, e-mail 4 times in...
