Anyone hear if Melange 12 is planned to be waxed? Based off the price guide stated, I'm guessing not :slight_frown:

There has been much debate about whether wax actually aids in slowing oxidation (especially in the cellaring forum), and unfortunately there has not been any evidence that it makes a significant impact.

Yea there really isn't any evidence to back the whole "wax keeps molecules out, good ones in". Sure does look purrty though.

I'm ok with waxing if folks scrape it off the bottles for reuse or return to a brewery for reuse. That's a lot of unnecessary waste if not.

There is no evidence that wax does anything except make the bottle look cool.

As for M12, I can't know for sure but I'd bet it wont be. M10 wasn't and this is the same price point so expect foil and be happily surprised if its different.

M12 is $34.99 before discount, M10 was $29.99 before discount. Per @mattolesh's post:
M12 should be waxed. If it's not, then it's not a pricepoint-based system, it's a "we'll wax what we decide should be waxed" system.

That said, I'd be fine with a "we're not going to wax anything" system. Their wax isn't particularly difficult to get off but it's not serving much of a purpose and using knives while drinking isn't my favorite activity.

I've had more than my fair share of accidents as well.

Also, I'm going today. I'll ask and see what they say.

I agree the wax doesn't really do anything except look good, and it's easy as hell to cut off so it's not a hassle, but I think foil is way cheaper, cleaner, and less wasteful in the long run.

Foil is WAY cheaper. I'm not sure everyone know's this but when they getting waxing done, they actually hire temps to come in and do it. That can't be cheap.

in matts post he mentioned capsuling terreux, not waxing. There was no mention of any turreux beers getting waxed. I think thats where alphateams question came from.

also, wondering if that little cardboard thing on the terreux bottles will stay. is that just a now thing while it launches or will those dissipate? I cant see any terreux bottles getting wax with that thing around the bottles neck.

Any chance the cost savings from not waxing can be passed on to the consumer? I'd be happy with no wax at all if it meant we would see lower pricing.

Yes, there is a chance. Roughly the same chance as PMR showing up at your house tomorrow and asking if you'd rather enjoy a bottle of Dave or a bottle of M while he rubs your feet.

Seriously though, I would bet money that eliminating waxing is a move to avoid raising prices, rather than a move that increases their profit. They already raised the prices of their society-exclusive fruited sours from $19.99 to $22.99, which is the first increase for a given tier of beers they've done in years. Lowering costs on a non-essential decorative aspect - waxing - will hopefully allow them to leave the prices of their sub-$30 strong ales intact for another year or two.
