My friend's having his stag do in Brussels over the weekend of the 14th and 15th June. We've currently got a visit to Cantillon and De Poechenellekelder on the cards. Any other recommendations? Also been recommended Triple Karmeleit beer, also we have a few ideas on what we want to try! Just looking for Beer/Place recommendations And if there's a good chocolate place we can visit ? Thanks!
Hi, Cantillon is really a must see (http://happygohoppy.fr/2014/04/cantillon/). If you want to buy some beers go to Der Bier Tempel (http://happygohoppy.fr/2014/04/de-bier-tempel-bruxelles-belgique/). To have a drink you should go to the Moeder Lambic Bars. There are two of them : The Original (http://happygohoppy.fr/2014/04/moeder-lambic-original/) and the Moeder Lambic Fontainas in the center. For fun, you can go to A La Becasse (http://happygohoppy.fr/2014/04/becasse/) to drink Timmermans Lambic. Cheers.
Thank you very much for your info! Cantillon looks even better than I thought it would be and Der Bier Tempel looks like it lives up to it's name! Moeder Lambic is definitely now on the list! A La Becasse looks cool too
Cantillon is definitely recommended, along with Moeder Lambic. While it tends to get a bad rap on here, the Delirium Café is probably the ideal place for a stag do They claim to offer the largest variety of beers for sale; put them to the test http://deliriumcafe.be/
Sorry, I have to differ, seriously. Cantillon is a terribly atmosphere for a stag do, and vice versa. Unless it's on the groom is dying to go there and most of the party are confirmed lambic fans, there's zero point. Otherwise, you're bringing a stag party out of the way of wherever else you probably want to go, to a musty industrial works, force-feeding your captive audience on gueuzes and such, which you can get elsewhere (see below). I'd give a very faint maybe to the idea of ML Fontainas, and certainly not to crowd a bunch of guys out on the lash into the St. Gilles storefront. But only on similar conditions: it's the groom's bucket list, or most of the party are serious beer hunters who already know and love their Belgians. There are more, many places that you can find Tripel Karmeliet and the like, with more than enough choice to satisfy everyone, in a livelier atmosphere more worthy of your solemn proceedings. Poechenellekelder and Becasse can probably absorb a more raucus party, are more than sufficiently belgo-quirky, and will please your serious beer hunters as well as those along for the ride. There's more in that vein at Aux Vieux Temps and you'll wander by plenty of other likely looking places. If you want a sports bar at some point, you can check out Good Kompany, the Big Game, or one of the Irish pubs over on Blvd. Anspach. And I totally agree that this is the occasion for Delirium. For chocolate, I'd just hit a Leonidas (there are several) for pralines, unless you need to bring some back to people who are deadly serious about their chocolate. For just chocolate (as in, not candies and such), hit a grocery store. I'd say the same for buying Trappists and some of the other better-distributed beers like Tripel Karmeliet. This is a serious responsibility. Don't Eff it up!
Some really great replies thanks everyone! As for Cantillon, my friend said he'd like to visit a brewery
Cantillion and Moeder Lambic are pretty fantastic. Also, hit up a Del Haize for stocking up on beers you'll drink in the hotel or wherever you're staying. You can get 75 cl of Chimay blue grand reserve for less than 3 euro. Same for singles of Rochefort 10. Another popular destination is Delirium. While it is rather touristy and more akin to a college bar, it might be more appropriate for what you're looking for. Huge selection downstairs. Close to one of the Moeder Lambic locations (and amost of the touristy stuff) and they're in an an alleyway with two other bars by the same owner, one that specializes in rum and one in absinthe. Can't speak for the rum bar, but the absinthe bar has quite a few lovely absinthes (Multiple Jades, if I remember correctly), though they also have all the gimmicky shit that gives the drink a bad name. Also, after some heavy drinking (or before, or during), hit up the Fritland located nearby. Regular fries and samurai sauce are my go to. I dream of the place. https://www.google.fr/maps/place/FR...ata=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xdb2692f2b293f1c3 Good luck and have fun! (dammit, now I have to plan a trip to Brussels for myself...)
Reasonable people can disagree about which is the best friterie in Brussels. But they're wrong. It's Fritland.
Arriving in Belgium this weekend...thanks for the advice fellas...and thanks for OP posting. Anyone down to share some De Garde with me next week?
I was there thursday and the fries and samuri sauce were great...not the best fries ive ever had but they were very good.
