I will be traveling to Germany & Vienna the end of May. Mainly to see a band playing in 4 cities in 5 days (concerts). But before I start my concert trek I want to stop in Belgium for the ales. I will be flying into Brussels on the 28th (morning) and only have 2 nights there. Really only one and half days. We get in the morning and have to fly out on the 30th in the am for the 1st concert in Berlin.

So is it worth going to Bruges or just stay in Brussels? Or just hang in Brussels? How about a day trip (May 29) to Bruges?

    Thank you.

We were in both cites a couple weeks ago. We quite enjoyed Brugge. We stayed here (nor bad for the price and the rooms are functional - just make sure you are on the 3d floor).

Secret option number 3) Ghent! though I could probably put up an equally strong argument for Antwerp.

Personally, I think Brussels is only worth a couple of hours, depending on how much time you spend at Cantillon:wink:
See the Grand Place, visit Moeder Lambic and maybe Bier Circus, depending on how beer focused you are.

You could do that in the am, then take the hour train to Bruges stay there a night, it is a beautiful city and worth visiting, then go the next day to Ghent and leave the am of the 30th to fly out of Brussels.

    cheers

-N8 we stayed just across from Ibis at Novotel, both hotels are in a great location, depending on how early you book you can get a great deal. Think we got Novotel for 70€

I am heading to Belgium for my honeymoon in September and have been meaning to start a thread like this one. We will be in Belgium for 5 or 6 days and were planning on staying in Bruges but doing day trips to Brussells, Ghent, Antwerp. Is this a good idea or would that be too much time in Bruges?

See, whereas I would say that Bruges is, while beautiful, an over-crowded tourist trap that doesn't justify more than a couple hours, whereas you can easily fill 2 days in Brussels & immediate vicinity whether exclusively beer focused or engaged in a broader range of tourism / cultural activities.

Yes, I've been to Bruges 3 times, and lived just outside Brussels for 3 years. I'm being slightly hyperbolic above, but I stand by the assertion that there is vastly more to do and see in Brussels than in Bruges. (And that much of Bruges is a tourist trap.)

Of course, one also should consider what type of tourist they are. Given 48 hours, I am absolutely the sort who would prefer to focus on one city rather than driving / training around to 3 or 4. Other people are the opposite. Presumably OP knows what type he is.

 i think everybody steps in a touristtrap when visiting a city... i saw westvleteren last week for €65 for 6 bottles ( a big trap)

Brussels > Brugges. If you want castles, go to Gent. If you want beer, go to Brussels.

Brugges is a fucking shit-hole. *ahem*
