Does anyone know much about this style? I am unfamiliar with it but I do love drier beers and am intrigued. Badger Hill has quietly been making some very tasty hoppy beers lately (Astronaut Brewer was outstanding) and hope this also hits the mark.

It’s so new that only a few will have tried it.

If they threw a lager yeast in it, I wonder if it would be a Session Pilsner?

Great Notion out in PDX has a Brut IPA that i had a week ago that is fantastic. It drinks like a Pils, but with what I will clumsily call "subtle" IPA flavor. If a local brewery does this well I will buy cases of it during the summer and fall...so I am hoping this becomes a trend. I spent the week since trying to think of what breweries could call it besides "Brut IPA"...since i am not sure how well that name markets itself...but haven't come up with anything decent. Either way i am excited to try this.

Brut IPA started in San Francisco. It's supposed to be a super effervescent IPA hopped on a NEIPA schedule (so super fruity and low bitterness) but the dryness is achieved by adding an enzyme called Amylo during fermentation that breaks down all the long chain residual sugars and lets the yeast bring the beer down to dryness.

We're just seeing the first examples in MN now - I believe most people heard about it at the Craft Brewers Conference last month so that's why we're seeing them pop up all of a sudden.

Funny thing about enzymes...they require heat to denature them. Hopefully people are adding them on the hot side (like in the mash)

If it’s just a NE IPA that is fully attenuated, then Wild Mind has had dozens of them.

I've tried only one Brut IPA, but, from what I've read about them (and consistent with the one I've tried), they tend to taste quasi-sweet, in fact often remarkably so, because the palate perceives "juiciness" as sweetness even if the residual sugars are low, and the intentionally subdued malt flavors provide little distraction from that juiciness. They're also low in bitterness, which is not the same as dryness but easily can be conflated with it by noses, tongues, and brains. Thus, despite their clear appearance and technical dryness, they seem designed to appeal to the same folks who enjoy NEIPAs rather than function antithetically to NEIPAs in the way that the name "Brut IPA" might initially imply. I'm sure breweries could make non-juicy versions of the style (relying on, say, piney, grassy, or earthy hops aromatics and flavors) that actually would appeal to fans of dry beers, but that would strictly limit their appeal and hype potential in the current market environment.

Am I losing it, or didn't Summit make one of these?

You are losing it . :stuck_out_tongue:
That was a Brit IPA (think British). This is a Brut IPA (think Champagne).

You were only off by one vowel, though.

Finally got down to BH..... this is outstanding. I did not know what to expect.

Dry but full of hop flavor and aroma. I liked it so much that I'm wondering if this might be my new favorite style, let alone beer.

    That good.

I'll try again before I rate, but worth trying if you like new stuff, especially hoppy.
