Does the yeast actually need help contacting the beer or is that total gimmickry?

This process accelerates the lagering process which results in the beer being ready to be shipped sooner. For commercial breweries time = money.

    Cheers!

Uhm...instead of going to all that trouble, why wouldn't you just drink something else?

That might be an oversimplification of the process - AB still has a relatively long combined lagering/kraeusening period for Budweiser when compared to other US macro brands - most contemporary sources put it at a vague "about 3 weeks". (But then, when's the last time MillerCoors has specified one of their AAL's lagering period? Even most the brewers of current "craft" brewed lagers are relatively silent on the topic, which once was a major bragging point of US lager brewers.)

Here's how The Practical Brewer (1977 ed.) described Beechwood Aging as done by "...one of the world's largest brewers..":

AB had a 3-4 month lagering period for Budweiser in the pre-Pro era, back when most every brewer still employed a chip cellar step. And they stuck to the traditional chip method when other brewers were experimenting with "Accelerated Batch Fermentation" and "Continuous Fermentation".

At least one AB brewmaster has claimed that warmer lagering temperatures, possible with improved sanitation methods and controls, is in part responsible for shortening the lager period of Budweiser over recent decades.

tap or bottle. ultimately, whatever is cheapest when i'm watching a game.

years ago, the Lantern in downtown Naperville (outside Chicago) had a Budweiser event where they drove up cases of Bud that were just bottled that morning in St. Louis. I'm not going to lie, it did taste pretty damn good. And they had the clydesdales there that day too, so that was kinda cool.

It's been a really long time since I had a regular Bud, but I do remember in '99 they came out with the Millennium cans that upped the ABV, and I remember thinking that it tasted better, or different, or something. But to answer the question, I'd buy cans...for portability sake...if I'm going to be drinking Bud, or any other AAL, I'm probably going to be somewhere that a tulip glass and bombers just won't be functional.

Cheers! (except to the beer snobs, get over it, unless you have a beer I want...then cheers!)

Absolutely no doubt....put some obscure label on it, and call it something like Bounders Throwback Lager....done deal

(Continuation of reply in post #127 - couldn't find the book before the "Edit" period was over )

Interestingly, the earlier 1944 edition of The Practical Brewer sort of implies that using chips in combination with carbonating by kraeusening (AB's process for Bud) is a zero-sum process, one offsetting the other as far as time goes:

I'm surprised so many people are actually answering this question. I figured this would be an"flame the op" thread!

For me WHEN I have a Bud, I prefer those aluminum bottles. After that, a can, and then finally, if I hate myself - a bottle. Never had it on tap, don't plan to.

    Coors is better, anyhow.

Opinionated revolving word being "good" here.

How about a PBR, Coors, Michelob, Miller High Life, etc?

Anheuser Busch can go fuck itself. When I'm drinking a light beer I make sure it's Miller Lite.

...and another thing, I've puked both Bud & Coors after drinking too much as a teenager, and I remember that Coors is way worse on the way back up:confused:

Can, because Bud is typically only going to be my beer of choice in situations where canned beer is desirable.

After all, sometimes you just gotta have that "brewed the hard way" flavor, ya know??

Steel "Tab Top" cans were probably the Buds I drank the most - underage, back in high school before I learned of AB's history in the US brewing industry and started not buying AB, Schlitz, Miller, and finally, Coors products. Revive that can (in states where legal ) and I might buy my first legal Budweiser in over 40-45 years :grinning: (or maybe "ever" - who can remember that far back).

(Unlike the pic, mine probably came from Newark, AB's first brewery outside St. Louis).

Not a huge fan of Bud, but when I have had it, I would say bottle all the way.
