I understand what you are saying but, for myself, when I try a beer the question I try to ask myself is: so I like this and will I buy it again? In my younger days, Bud or Mich were my "go to" brands. After getting into wine I gave up on them as the taste profile just didn't appeal to me. It wasn't that I thought they were "swill" but rather that there wasn't a lot of taste. I sort of rediscovered beer a few years ago at a sponsored beer tasting - finally beer that I could taste again.

The people who drink bud wouldn't drink it and the people who drink IPA's wouldn't drink it.

There's no market for it at all at the moment. In the future? Maybe. Any brand could evolve and take on a new mantra. If they really see drinkers abandoning regular old Bud all together, who knows. This article springs to mind.

But I bet AB In Bev are very happy with Goose IPA at the moment.

Craft is 11% of the US beer market by volume only. The number that terrifies the macros is craft beer's 20% of the US market by revenue -- which is rising fast.

Mitch Steele worked on an IPA formulation while at AB in NH. He covers it in his book on IPA. Never hit the market IIRC.

I know it's been around for years. Just saying that were there to be a "Bud IPA" I would imagine the taste to be similar.

I imagine this conversation was had several years ago at AB:

Marketing guy: "The recent craft beer boom appears to be fueled by America's love of hops. Now I know it isn't our forte, but I propose we create Bud IPA, after pouching some of the craft community's top brewers of the style. Bud is America's beer, but America has spoken, and they want IPA. It only makes sense. What do you say?"

    Boss: "Too Risky."

Marketing guy: "Ok, what about this: margarita beer."

    Boss: "Fuck yes."

Marketing guy: "aand, aaaand, aand...wait for it..wait for it........I'm thinkiiin'.....cans shaped like bowties. BOOM!"

Boss: "Goddammit Gump you are a goddamn genius!"

Wow you're bringing back memories.. They were trying to have their own SA's Lager under their portfolio. It was a drinkable beer, nothing special

Which is what it should have been... an amber ale for the masses. That actually shouldn't be too hard to brew or sell (to AB drinkers) if you ask me.

Jeff, the IPA that Mitch Stone brewed was called Demon’s Hopyard IPA.

There must have been a release of some kind since BAs purchased this beer and generated reviews: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29/30064/

    Cheers!

Can't help but feel that the majority of those reviews would have been higher had it been brewed elsewhere.

Agreed there was plenty of bias at work there... interestingly note the Bros very positive reviews (bottom of the page). From their description Demon's Hopyard sounds like a precursor to the heavily dry-hopped, citrusy IPAs that dominate today's market vs the old-school intensely bitter piney IPAs. But I might be reading into it too much.

Read the entry, only a short release. You are correct Jack.
