I see hard ciders have really taken off in the last 5 years.
I remember when the only ciders I could get here in Pennsltucky we're Hornsby's and another I can't recall, and then the only place to get them was in the State Liquor store.
Now, an entire isle at my local beer distributor is dedicated to hard ciders & some meads.
Mead is also another beyond beer type beverage that I am totally behind that is seeing an increase in availability.
I enjoy both cider & Mead, but just not as much as beer. Beer is in my blood, literally.
I always keep a keg each of home brewed cider and sparkling mead on tap along with my home brew beers. Variety is nice!

Apparently so. Was just reading an unfortunate story from Albany, of a missing 14 yr-old girl.
Description sounded like it from the 60s-nostalgia era of the mid-80s : bell-bottoms, Timberland boots, & a puffy coat w/ fake fur-lined hood.
+ saw an ad on YT yesterday
(my hands were tied up w/ the cat hanging off me - Millard Spillmore slipped on takeoff, & missed his landing target.),
with a 20-something woman in bell-bottoms customizing her luxury car with 60s-looking accessories. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Come clean now. Just how many shots of vodka did it take to get that bottle of Zima down?

These have been a big deal in Michigan for probably 12-15 years. Obviously, we’ve had medical marijuana since 2008. At this point, you can be at any 21+ event and the shot girls will typically have a marijuana infused option. I don’t go for it for many reasons, work not being the least of them but it is very available. Cheers.

[IMG] Did someone say hard cider? I’ll join you for one. There’s probably 100+ varieties of these at my favorite local. Lots of Michigan cider makers and orchards have begun to do them as well (shameless plug; Bayne’s Apple Valley- Freeland MI). With regards to mead, no shortage of that either. Although, it does tend to be expensive. The fruited Schramms can start at 30 some dollars for a 375 ML which typically turns me off, although they are known to be an exceptional brand. All in all, I welcome options. Cheers!

RE: other beverages, it's all about "healthy" alternatives now and for us carb/calorie counters we just can't drink as much beer as we used to. And I have found that now that I have adjusted to lighter feeling beverages, I can't handle nearly as much beer as I used to be able to either. Also add on top of that how much beer costs now, how many options there are of the same thing (IPAs/hazies) and how much of it all is just okay, and it's easy for me to see why sales are declining.

Zima has been rereleased since a few times, with as recently as last year or the year before. In '18-19 they had a big marketing blitz about it:

Hopefully seltzer will die altogether and I will see more space for beer at the market.

For the love of God! Why couldn't it be THC infused craft beer?! LOL!

    Well....

I personally agree with your sentiment since I am a beer guy but I suspect that the hard seltzers may just be replaced with the next 'new thing' (perhaps RTD cocktails?). Beer consumption as measured by volume is a decreasing business so beverage companies like AB InBev, Boston Beer (should be Beverage) Company, etc. will continue to create other "Beyond Beer" stuff.

The half full way of viewing things is that there will always be beers available for sale to us but some of the "Beyond Beer" products may go the way of Zima.

    Cheers!

P.S. And there is always homebrewing; I will shortly be drinking a homebrewed Quad.

I would truly be surprised if seltzers are ever “replaced” at this point. Their market share might decrease, such as “craft” beer has, but I’ve noticed so many people, mainly females, that are absolutely hooked on these things. People who go on diets and still want to binge drink will be a forever issue for alcohol manufacturers. The “zero added sugar” and ultra low carb monikers plus the “crisp and refreshing” taste have made these things a mainstay. Hell, I’ll drink a seltzer here or there myself.

You might be correct here but I wouldn't be surprised that some person would have expressed a similar comment concerning Zima a number of years ago.

    Cheers!

Me, too. Throw two or three ice cubes into a highball glass, add a few drops of your favorite MiO and a couple shots of Everclear, top it all off with cold seltzer, and Bob's yer uncle.

(Disclaimer: I am a trained professional, albeit in an entirely different field. Don't try this at home.)

I work security at a major football venue and have noticed, in the past 2 seasons, that a large portion of the "male": population is heavy into these seltzers, too. So, it's not just the females. . . kinda makes me want to tell 'em to turn in their "man card"!:smile::smile:

I was at my local Total Wine yesterday and was surprised to see that the area that used to house seasonal beers and taps for growler filling (Ok the taps have long been abandoned), was now all "beyond beer" selections. TW's beer selection is still quite good and I did find some new local beers to try, but "beyond beer" is definitely the "new black"!

I'd like to think I speak for most when I say that I'd much rather prefer a cocktail hand made because you can control strength and the fresh ice or fruit is just great. I've had vodka mixes ready to go in a can and it's just not the same. Idk if it's really just dextrose like the twisted teas. Which aren't horrible. The Philadelphia pride light twisted tea is actually good. But I can see the convenience of pre moxed ready to go cocktails. I don't see seltzer going anywhere anytime soon of ever. I know plenty of people who still order them at bars and bring them to cook outs.

I had a guy at a BBQ once bitch at me for handing him a coors light. Which he drank full send. We were already a half ounce of mushrooms deep. U get thirsty lol. But I was like look man. The only beers left are coors light or seltzer. Sixtel of yards gone. Bud gone. DAB gone. Guess he preferred seltzer.

I have no idea about "most" here but I can report that I have never drank a RTD cocktail and unless I am attending an event (e.g., party) where one was handed to me I likely never will. I do drink cocktails but those are ones I mix myself.

My guess is that we will collectively learn more about the popularity of RTD drinks in the future. I have a suspicion that these products may not be as popular in Pennsylvania since they can only be sold at State Stores (aka Fine Wine & Spirits stores). In other states where these products could be sold at other sorts of retailers (e.g., supermarkets) they may be a more popular selling thing.

    Cheers!
