I realize this forum is more for the actual cellared beer, but should be close enough.

In the process of gutting my sub basement, and decided to add a true temp controlled cellar. I'm currently in the planning stages, and looking for some ideas, from others that have done this, on how to keep cost down. I'm not looking for anything elaborate, just a well insulated room, with a row of shelves on either side, and maybe a section of large PVC pipes or something similar for Lambics and such. Electrical should already be taken care of, As I left the old wiring in. Building the room, insulating, and drywalling should be a breeze, but the bigger concerns, are the cooling/humidifier unit, and door. I've been checking craiglist, but nothing close enough so far. Thought about using a window A/C unit, with a seperate humidifier, but the room won't have access to a window, and I don't really want to have to constantly turn the humidifier on and off. I have also looked at some of the cheaper Wine Cooling units, but don't want something that will break down all the time. The door is another issue. I know real cooler doors are extremly pricey, but don't want to skimp on efficiency by just using a wood door. Ideas?

I found a great deal of inspiration reading this thread. I am sure you can scale it to your requirements. Here is a PDF he linked with a summary.
