Ipa's whose hoppiness fades fast...a beer that comes to mind is Jai Alai.
Love the stuff when it's fresh but after about about a month or so the hops aren't very bright anymore. I feel the exact same way about flower power.

The title seems to imply that the OP thinks there are some nefarious brewers out there...essentially creating IPAs with 'planned obsolescence' for the sake of turnover...

Any IPA in a can. Bottles tend to break when they fall.

Maine Lunch, and many of their other hoppy beers, don't particularly last long. Amazing fresh, so-so after a month.

Below is a list of IPAs/DIPAs (off the top of my head) which seem to 'fall off a cliff' wrt hop aroma/flavor after a short (e.g. 1 month of so) timeframe:

    • Ithaca Flower Power
    • Ballast Point Sculpin
    • Russian River Pliny the Elder
    • Cigar City Jai Alai
    • Fat Heads Headhunter
As has already been mentioned, continuous storage at refrigerator temperatures can extend the timeframe for the 'fall off the cliff' phenomenon. The challenge with the refrigeration/storage aspect is that unless you purchase the beer very fresh (days to 1-2 weeks from packaging) and then you place it in your refrigerator there is absolutely no way of knowing if the beer you purchase has been continuously stored cold.

    Cheers!

“Assuming @tjosborne means which IPAs are built to fall off quickly, I'd say almost all of them…”

But the rate (or timeframe if you prefer) of fall off is different from one IPA brand to another.

For example, Sierra Nevada hoppy beers like Torpedo and Celebration still taste pretty good after 3 months of room temperature storage. For some reason (I think a combination of packaging technology and recipe formulation) those beers are more resilient to aging. Now, on the other hand Ithaca Flower Power at 3 months of room temperature storage is just a malty mess.

    Cheers!
