I've had a good experience with the great western 2 row they sell. It's cheap and it's nice. Just got a sack of halcyon from them that I'm using in a wheatwine.

Meanwhile in Alaska midwest wants $109.32 for shipping alone per sack. Good thing I'm not huge into brewing yet where i need that much grain.

Thanks for posting this. I can easily get there for a day trip, hit a few pubs, buy sacksof malt, drive home, and skip the ship. Great prices, def better than my LHBS prices.

I should call them and ask how much he will sell me a sack of a few things. I hate the drive over there.

They list their prices on the website.

I started up a group grain buy because we could not find bulk grain cheap enough. It has worked well. We do full and split sacks, which means if you want 5, 10, 15 pounds of a specialty and can find others of like mind, you can get it for almost wholesale prices. It was a lot of work to find a brewery or LHBS to work with us, but we have been doing it for almost 2 years and still going strong. Can't hurt to approach your LHBS or local brewery and say look, we will buy other stuff (hops, yeast, beer) but give us a break on grain and we will flood you with business....best of luck!

So I bit the bullet, and stopped in at my local homebrew store.

Ended up getting a sack of 2 row, and a sack of pilsner malt.. Price wise.. was maybe.. MAYBE 4-6 bucks cheaper a sack than buying it online..

Got a couple pounds of munich and vienna, and acid malt along with crystal 40.

I think in the long run, as far as the drive is, the service, and the hassle.. I will entertain the idea of paying for shipping for a sack of malt online. I spent more in time and gas getting it. Needed a bunch of other stuff like a few german hops and some keg stuff, but online.. midwest has some good pricing for domestic malts.

Now to find some storage for the sacks inbetween use.

2 5 gallon bucket w/ gamma lids hold 1 sack of grain. I get free buckets from the bakery at the grocery store (used for icing).

And this is eaten up by paying local sales tax.

By necessity all my ingredients and equipment (except mop) are bought online. Sign of the future? . . . already preparing a drone landing pad in my backyard . . .

That's nice to know. I'll have to go to the store and pick up some buckets then. Or maybe order them off uline

I guess I'm lucky to have three home brew shops within 20 miles of me, two of which I'm betwixt about 5-6 miles away. But they all seem priced slightly higher than other lhbs' I've looked at. It is nice to be close though.

I've used menards or lowes buckets with standard lids for years, never had an issue. I had some 2 row for almost 2 years, and it still brews award winning beers.

Nice, I guess I'll stock up on the buckets at uline and fill 'em up.

Opened up a sack today to run through the new mm3.. Thing is a beast, thats for sure. The crush from morebeer was pitiful, and I'll even admit, mine looks a LITTLE too much, but 70% of the husks are staying somewhat intact. Will run it and see how the sparge goes next week.

to clarify for the benefit of all, I'm sure you mean 2x 5 gallon buckets will hold 1 sack of grain.
