I've had this happen with several of my brews but my last did it exceptionally well. I added a 1 quart starter to a 5 gallon batch and within 3 or 4 hours i thought it was going to blow out my fermenter. But then it subsides, slows almost to a stop within 15 hours and then starts up again within 30 hours. It is now bubbling away happily and steadily. Its that initial burst that has me curious.

has anyone else ever experienced this?

Was it really hot? You may want to use a blowoff tube for your next batch so that you don't blow your fermenter. If it was the proper temp then its probably doing very well and no cause for concern.

I'm wondering about the temp you ferment at too. Sounds pretty aggressive.
