I'm looking into using appropriate lengths of PVC irrigation pipe to sleeve bottles in the box. This stuff can be bought inexpensively and should provide a ton of protection. Would be glad to share the results if anyone's interested.

Wow! I'm in the middle of my first trade. My trading partner will receive the package today via FedEx. I was so paranoid to make this exchange a pleasant one, that I used a 6 styrofoam wine shipper, and THEN enclosed each bottle in its own ziplock bag and bubble wrapped inside each capsule, and used crumpled newspaper to fill any additional void. That packing job is just asking for trouble...

That's a solid idea but how does it effect the weight. Do you still bubble wrap inside the tubes. You could probably then stack a crap ton more in a box then as well without worrying about them breaking each other.

I'll one up ya. I wax every bottle cap first, then put it in an individual zippered ziploc bag, then wrap in bubble wrap, then put them in a styro shipper (assuming a major trade, and not just a bottle or 2). Then I tape the crap out of the outside with heavy-duty strapping tape, and slap fragile stickers on it.

Damn boxes are like Ft Knox when I'm done with em. Gives me great peace of mind.

I have to do some research on choosing the right pipe, i.e. weight, wall thickness, pipe dia vs bottle dia etc... I going to put a set of calipers to some bottles, (12oz, 22oz, 750), and take a trip to my friendly local Home Depot this weekend. I'll post something to this forum afterwards.

That seems like it would be more expensive (both materials and shipping) over a styro wine bottle shipper and provide abouit the same protection (outside of the most extreme abuse).

I wish there was a picture of the box i packed for my first trade. Enough bubble wrap and styrofoam to raise the titanic!

Hopefully the dude replaces the bottle or makes it up to you with a secondary trade heavily weighing in your favor. Eventually the right thing will prevail... right? Maybe? I hope....

I had a guy ship me an 8 pack of BCBS wrapped with newspaper, and thrown into a Zombie Dust case. Worse job than what you have there but it made it somehow.

Oh - he crossed out "Zombie Dust" with a pen.

Well, he read my last BM half an hour ago, no response yet. Probably too busy at work to respond yet... right?

I received a trade where the shipper did this, but it was very hard cardboard tubes instead of PVC pipe. It worked well.

No. It was one of the bombers. FFF Dreadnaught. Probably an $11 or $12 bottle, rated 98 on BA. Haven't ever gotten to try it. Was very excited for it. Sent some Heady Topper for it.

It doesnt matter if it was a bottle of Corona. If it was part of an agreed trade it should be made good.

I used to work for a camera company and we also made lenses... We used to ship the lenses to productions in awesome laser cut foam filled cases. You may be familiar with Pelican cases? How rad would it be to have a dumbed down version with high density laser cut fowm perfect for a specific bottle size. The travelers with cases filled with Westy may be the only people interested, but damn would those sell! anyone care to invest in my newfound business plan? 12 bombers to a case and almost certain nothing would ever happen to them.... i know i know, you can thank me later.

damn. I've never had Dreadnaught either. I hope you get your bomber. I was just speculating on the cost ratio of shipping 1 bottle of hopslam in the mail vs taking a short term loss for some long term karma and beer gain.

That is classic box within a box packing. Except he forgot the second box... (also didn't use enough peanuts, unless you already removed a bunch)

Also this is why you don't ship with USPS people. It's not the legality, it's that they treat boxes like dogshit compared to UPS/Fedex. I cringe everytime I buy some knick knack on Ebay and it is sent via USPS.

Bottom line - this guy needs to make good on the broken bottles, no questions asked, or else he goes on the bad trader list. He's also pulling your leg about 100 trades - if he has done 100 trades in boxes like that, half of them would have broken.

that packing is eerily reminiscent of how Struise used to pack their boxes

Already done in several existing Pelican styles for the wine market, but still!
