Interesting article on Butternuts, a brewery not often discussed around here (except in negative terms ) but they do seem to be well-distributed within a relatively large 14 state region in the northeast, so someone is buying and drinking the stuff, even though they're probably not the typical "BA" beer geek.

I didn't know that they've bought Cooperstown Brewing Co. (back in Sept. 2012 apparently), which has been doing quite a bit more contract brewing for some newer breweries, like Spider Bite, Evil Genius, Ruckus, etc, and even some Butternuts bottled brands.

For good reasons; their beers are pretty bad.

Yes, I thought I made that pretty clear in the part of my post you chose not to quote - that the geekery in general doesn't care for their products. (I don't either.) And that is why I find interesting - the fact that they're growing, expanding their offerings, buying a competitor, looking to build a new brewery and now doing quite a bit of contracting for some start-ups.

Truly bad? Should I cross them off the tour circuit when I go up there?

I understood what you were saying. I just had to throw my opinion into the mix (and reiterate yours).

Yes, truly bad. Mediocre at best. Check out the ratings, they're pretty spot on. Definitely a waste of time, much better ways to spend your time if your in the area for some reason.

Thanks for the head's up. I'll cross it off my list. But, I'll be visiting Ommegang for a second time. Has anyone else been to the breweries and wineries in the general area? I don't want to waste my time with places that are mediocre.

I went after BCTC '11, and while it's certainly not great, I thought it was worth popping in for 30 minutes. As previously mentioned, the beers arent many peoples favorites, but I thought it was still an ok time.

They also had 2 "experimental" in house beers on draft. They were pretty bad, but worth trying...

Of their four lead beers, I thought the hefe was only decent, and the only decent one.

Somehow I was under the impression they went out of business ( and I figured no loss). Very surprised that they seem to be thriving.

Now looking for more info on their purchase of Cooperstown, a brewery I liked back in the day. Enjoyed my visit there way back in 1999.

Perhaps their "success" is due to their price point. Go on BeerMenus, search "Butternuts" and check out some of the prices for 6 pks. I only checked 3 beers but all were under $10 and one was under $9.

It's incredibly hard to find a 6 pack of drinkable local brew on shelves in NYC for under 10 bucks. It's often either Brooklyn Brewery or Butternuts, and Butternuts is often cheaper. Porkslap Pale Ale absolutely FLIES out of quasi-craft beer bars here. It's like the upscale $4 can that people order to avoid BMC or PBR.

Beyond that, I don't actually mind it. For a pale ale, it's not traditionally hopped; it's almost floral, and I dig their farmhouse style yeast. Simple, but... it's coming out of a can. The hefe ain't bad, and I know a few people who are big fans of Moo Thunder. Their "Brutus" series produces some decent beers too. And it's clear they know how to produce solid beers for contract; because that's what they're doing for Spider Bite.

Sure, you can jump up a couple bucks and be rewarded with better quality, but there's a price point for everyone. I'm not surprised they're expanding.

I've noticed Pork Slap and Moo Thunder at a bunch of concert venues lately in the CT/NY area.

And with AFK's remark, I'm putting Butternut back on the tour list for next week.

You really need to stop taking advice from these posts and make up your own mind.

Exactly my point. And I've had the Brutus Imperial IPA on draft and liked it but could never find it again to re-taste. Problem is, I've personally come to realize long ago that I probably won't like anything that sells for less than $10 a sixer, other than Sierra Nevada.

Exactly - I'm with you on SN, but I think to a lot of people local is a preferred option. And I'm always happy when I see Porkslap at a bar where the other options are BMC, watered down liquor, day-old wine, or sam adams seasonal out of a dirty line.

I hear ya on that. I'm lucky in that I can get NEBCO Sea Hag for $9 a 6er

Is it weird that their success makes me a little angry? It's not even like their beers are bland and should appeal to a wide swath of drinkers (like Harpoon or something); nay, their beers are quite flavorful, and the flavor is beyond disgusting. It's so very confounding.
