Sorry in advance if this thread title evoked a sigh from you.

I know Mikkeller is quite hyped up and, for many, does not live up to the hype. I also know there have been threads about buying from him online.

Anyhow, I'm in London for another 6 months and then heading back to North America. The point of this thread is for the following observation:

    - If I'm ever to expose myself to a decent range of Mikkeller beers, the time is now. The vast majority of users on this site are over in the States where buying Mikkeller is more difficult and more expensive - I think that largely drives down his reputation on here. To that audience, his beers are overpriced. Over here, however, we can order from his website with free delivery on orders of about 80-85 quid.

Out of curiousity, I filled up a cart to reach the free shipping limit - if I convert 1000kr to GBP, I get just under 80. I assume it might be a bit higher in the end, though.

    For that price, I'd get:

    3x Beer Geek Vanilla Shake
    1x Beer Geek Dessert
    2x Beer Geek Brunch Weasel
1x Orange Yuzu Glad I Said Porter
    1x Black
2x Beer Geek Breakfast Barrel Aged Bourbon
    1x It's Alive! (750ml)
    1x Monk's Brew
1x Yin & Yang (Evil Twin)
1x Beer Geek Breakfast Barrel Aged Cherry Wine
    1x Raspberry Quadrupel
1x Monk's Brew Barrel Aged Bourbon
    1x Back in Black (Naparbier)

Those 17 bottles for, let's say, 85 quid. 5 quid/bottle (one of those is a 750ml). The vast majority of which are very alcoholic. Won't be able to do something like this once I'm back across the atlantic.

Cheers for listening to me ramble about trying to justify this transaction! Between a big order such as this, and another big order from BeerofBelgian/BelgianBeerFactory, I'll have enough beer to last myself into summer and be a very happy camper.

On a sidenote, if anyone has interest in potentially going in together on an order - let me know. I would like to order less, but don't think it's worth it without the free shipping (and realistically, it's not as if I won't drink all this within short time anywyas!)

For 85 quid I could get almost double that amount from Beers of Europe. It wouldn't be Mikkeller but they're not my kind of brewery anyway. Unless you're really into their beer it doesn't sound like good value at all.

Well, delivery will run you 7 quid - so 78 quid for about 34 beers? 2.29 a beer on Beers of Europe? I'm sure it's possible but that website is not a great deal and I wouldn't necessitate that quantity > quality (I am positively not saying you can't get damn good beers on there for <2.50). Not to mention the high ABV of Mikkeller's beers - price/ABV might be a better indicator than price/bottle. 4.30 quid for a 13.0ABV Vanilla Shake? If I saw that at Kris Wines I would load up.

Not trying to be argumentative, though. Their style is not for everyone and that's just fine. Just thinking aloud here.

Man, if you've spent any time in the US, $5/per is a downright steal, at least as far as pricing goes. (I'm of mixed opinion on the quality of Mikkeller's brews myself, but from a value perspective it really isn't bad at all.)

Anyway, thx for the reference to BeersofBelgium -- incredibly reasonable shipping to the UK. I'm traveling to the UK this summer, sadly without a chance to make it over to Belgium, but with shipping prices like that, I'm thinking I'll just have a box sent over to take back with me to the US. Thanks again!

It would be 5 quid a bottle, so about $7.50-8, but again it's all relative. And as you said, once I'm back in the US/Canada, it'll be twice that much if it's even available.

Glad you checked out that website! BelgianBeerFactory is also a great one, and they have different selections. But yeah - St Bernardus Abt 12, Cantillon Kriek, Rochefort 10 and 3F Oude Geuze for < $20 sans shipping? I'm a Belgian beer lover and the prices on these two sites blow the roof of Beers of Europe, Ales by Mail, BeerMerchants, BeerHawk, BeerRitz, etc.

You can even get yourself some Westy XII for about 10 euros.

Yeah, man, was kinda stunned at how nice a range of brews they offer. I'd been thinking I was gonna use Etre Gourmet for my purchase, and though they do have the perk of offering multiple vintages of a given beer (say, 2012/13/and 14 3F Oude Geuze), the prices on BeersofBelgium are so darn competitive, I may just end up going with them.

Have you ever ordered from them before? If so, was the packaging up to snuff? Figured I'd just count the box as checked luggage on the way home. (This also frees me up from trying to find/try some of these beers (e.g., Cantillon) while in the UK, ensuring I can instead stuff myself to the gills with as much cask ale as I can find!)

It's cool you can get them for that with free delivery, so I guess if you wanted to buy a load of Mikkeller it's probably the best option.

Personally I'm just pretty happy there's so much good local beer made nowadays, I'm really spoilt for choice (compared to say, 5 years ago). So imported beers aren't really attractive to me, with the risks of shipping, storage conditions, BBDs etc. Plus I've always found Mikkeller beers to be risky in themselves. My wallet still aches after paying around £8 each for Beer Geek and Beer Hop Breakfast a few years ago, just to get 2 watery, dull stouts.

I'm really tempted by the crates on BBF. 2.08 euros for a Gulden Draak 9000 seems amazing for how great the beer is. Plus the delivery is pretty much what you'd pay for delivery from a UK site.

I haven't yet, but I will let you know when I do!

It would indeed save you some frustration from running around London trying to find specific brews - though there are loads of great bars here with a ton of Belgian options. The London page on this site is really just the start.

For sure! Heck, 2.08 quid for a Gulden Draak 9000 is a great bargain to me - whenever I go back and check out the site, I'm always pleased even before I realize it's in Euros and it's that much cheaper.

Well, it depends on what you buy from there, but with about £3 being my average, I'd still be getting 26 bottles out of £78.

Fair enough. I'm not trying quarrel. Everyone should do their own thing and I'm glad people have different tastes, otherwise it would be a lot harder to find stuff!

Was more a hypothetical me-thinking-out-loud type thing. I'm probably newer to beer than most here. So I like to run some things through people just to make sure I'm not spewing craziness!

    Cheers my friend!

What a match on Sunday. Had to record it as I was doing family stuff in Oxford for the afternoon - ran and dove across my kitchen floor when Coutinho hit that cracker.

You only live once! If you are craving Mikeller and it will cost you 50% of what you would pay in the states, pay the £80 and fill your boots. What is that, one day's salary? (before tax, pension and healthcare) It's better to regret the things you did do than the thing's you didn't.

Don't know how I missed this thread.
HurrahBeer, I would just go ahead and order the beer without any hesitation. Its a bit pricey but like you said its a potentially once in a lifetime opportunity.
As for Mikkeller, I've been fortunate enough never to have had a bad experience and IMHO the brewery has now crossed the threshold beyond consistency and is into the realms of world class. Many of the beer listed in the opening thread are just superb.
Go for it. 17 Mikkeller bottles for the price of two Tactical Nuclear Penguins. You know it makes sense.
