Hi guys, going to be in New Yor city next tuesday and for 15 days.I would like to buy some homebrewing items that are not available here in Argentina. Making a research on the net I found this Shop : http://bitterandesters.com/ I would like you to advise me what liquid yeast are a MUST buying taking into a count I like all beer styles , I would like to buy many of them but there will be too little room in my luggage. Want to buy a Blichmann beer gun , some hops and whatever you think I MUST buy . Have a bit of concern about the beer gun in regards having problems at the airport custom control cos it really looks like a kind of gun.Big items of course I can not buy. TIA
You'll be fine with the beer gun. Just take it apart and it looks like some random metal pieces. Have the Blichmann website description of the product pulled up on your phone if you are paranoid. What yeast strains and hop varieties are NOT available to you in Argentina? That would help us figure out what would be good to bring back. Can't you order yeast and hops online and have delivered to you in Argentina? I know shipping is likely a significant cost, but I'd do a big order all at once and get bulk rate shipping to off set the cost.
There are no liquid yeast available here at the moment, just dry. It has recently changed the government, now it is possible to buy things abroad(we are free again , thanks of God) so there are thousands of orders coming together and custom service is almost KAPUTT.
Good to hear you are making it our way. I think you are out of luck with liquid yeast. Those bugs don't like to be too far outside of their preferred sleeping temperature. If you can wrap a freezer pack in a towel along with the yeast, maybe. But that seems like a lot to lug around. Homebrewers have some really new and extraordinary hops available at the moment. More so than even the craft brewers in some instances. Jarrylo. Calypso. Just two you might pick up. If you can have a local order from Northern Brewer or Adventures In Brewing, or Williams Brewing. Or Midwest Supply. Check out what seems like fun and have them waiting to bring home. You might consider picking up a nice kettle. They prices have really come down recently. Then fill up the pot with every little thing that you think would be nice to have. This way you are paying the ridiculous carry on fee but carrying a whole lot of equipment back with you. What customs agent is going to argue with making beer at home? That's like a basic human right man. Good luck.
I know it won´t be nice for yeasties to travel so far from home , at unconfortable temperature either, but I guess I still can make them work because some will survive. I have a stir plate and many Erlenmeyers to feed them back.

What beer styles have you not tried in Argentina or not been able to produce to your satisfaction? Do you think ingredients are the key? Are you interested in Belgians? English ales? Hefeweizen? I think the dry yeast selections available for Belgian and English styles do not capture the range of possibilities available as liquid yeast. On the other hand, I think the dry versions of Hefe may just be awful.
I am intersted in Belgian and english styles for sure, i would like to give a try to sour beers, using brettanomyces and other bugs you can recommend me. I have my own wild yeast , I have captured and cultivated it from fruits , have brewed 2 batches of straight lambic so far.The second one is amazing, very weird and tasty flavor, with a mild sourness. It seems as you would have blended white wine, champagne and a pale beer.
Out of curiosity, will they bust your chops for bringing back 1) yeast 2) hop cones I would think there would be no issue with pellets, but whole cones might be an issue
You should be ok with liquid yeast until you get home. Just keep it in a refridgerator until you leave. The bottom of planes are usually kept in the 60s for pets. Ask the brew store for dry ice to pack it in before you leave. I would get white labs since they come in strong tubes. I would try to get wlp-001, wlp-029, wlp-011, wlp-500. How do hops grow there. I would ask for hop rhizomes and grow your own.
No, not at all. It's a vine. You do need well drained soil and plenty of vertical height along with something for the vine to grow on to. You also need the right sunlight and climate conditions. Given that Argentina is not all one climate this requirement is going to vary. Cheers.
Yes, I think I am going to have some troubles if I try to enter malt, hops, and yeast. If I declare these items I´ll violate some bromatolgic rules, I will need to mix these items with my clothes and pray
I would bring back some liquid yeast if you can get away with it. I cannot in good conscience recommend that bring back rhizomes. If you like Belgian and English yeasts, I'd look for a variety
