Helping a friend piece together sort of a best vs the best of CA and MN. Primarily IPAs, and of course they have to be available in MN. It's for a birthday party and he's hosting sort of a mini dabbler type of thing.

    Here's my list so far:
    CA
    Ballast Point Sculpin
    Ballast Point Grunion
    Alesmith IPA
    Sierra Nevada Beer Camp
    Alpine Pure Hoppiness

    MN
    Surly Abrasive
    Fairstate Pale
    Townhall Marsala Mama

Looking for more opinions on MN beers. My list was longer and he culled it down based of his personal taste and he kind of has a point. Beers like Day Tripper, Bent Hop... are great beers but not sure they hold up to CA. Any ideas?

What would be a competitor for Abrasive? Totally drawing a blank on that. Stone Enjoy By I guess would be my vote.

    You forgot Saga.

I can't include Saga, he'd have to buy cases and cases of it and no one would try any of the other beers. Wouldn't be a fair fight.

Surly Furious has to be in this. Could also include Overrated if you want an MN take on a West Coast IPA.
Indeed Let It Ride will be coming out again very soon, so depending on when this is taking place, I would include that.
    Fair State IPA
    Castle Danger Ode IPA
    Bent Paddle Harness IPA

Not sure what you could put up against Abrasive, as it will destroy anything Cali that we can get here. Pure Hoppiness has a completely different flavor profile, but is a DIPA, so maybe that.

Too bad it isn't CD Mosaic season right now...stuff is seriously top notch.

    I'd also say Furious.
Steel Toe Size 11 could be worth a shot, but consensus is pretty much no good this year 'round these parts.
Steel Toe Size 7, however, is very solid.

If Fulton has their batch 300 out, or whatever it was, I'd definitely include it. I also agree with others on adding CD Ode, Size 7, and I'm still a fan of Furious.

The California side needs Nelson and Enjoy By for sure. You could drop Grunion and Beer Camp.

CA list is lacking in Pliny/Blind Pg as well.

Is Haymaker on the shelves around here? I remember loving that one when I had it.

Just had CD Mosaic on tap in Brainerd recently. Getting some age on it but still tasty.

The obvious CA competitor to Abrasive is Lagunitas Sucks.

You need to drop fairstate pale like a hot potato. Not a good reputation for MN beers. If you need a pale, then day tripper should get the nod IMO

While Sucks is a good beer, this is not a competition.
