Will a normal crown cap work with a bottle that was originally cage and cork? I don't think the diameter is a problem, but the "lip" where you roll the crown on looks different? Thinking I might like to use some of the bigger cage/cork bottles that are nicely shaped for gifts, but not interested in cleaning up the mess should they go volcanic.

It depends on the bottle, but most cork/cage bottles will not accept a standard cap. Some won't accept any cap, while others need a larger diameter cap.

Thanks. Cross that idea off the list...not worth it.

Hill Farmstead uses 350ml bottles that accept a standard crown cap. And the lhbs by me has 700ml bottles that accept them as well.
