Mine were white wax too and delicious.

I also applaud your understanding of sunken costs:slight_smile: If the beer sucks, why finish it?

    cheers

Touche, and lesson learned. Although I didn't expect to find much support for my statement considering the praise in this thread. I am a huge fan of coffee and/or vanilla porters and stouts. Love me some Victory at Sea. Highly unlikely we had 2 bad bottles as you said, considering they were bought at different stores, at different times, and with different wax colors. I don't think the wax really meant anything, because they tasted the same. Hard to remember specifics about the taste, other than it being very bland - not bad necessarily just very bland. Disgusting may have been a bit strong, although I didn't enjoy it at all.

Actually the main reason I started this thread was because I knew Mogli was highly rated, but almost nobody ever mentions it, so I was curious why that might be.

Your mention of Victory at Sea is intriguing, in that I had a bottle in San Diego about a year and a half ago and absolutely loved it, considered it one of the best porters I'd ever had; but then more recently I had another bottle here in Seattle (after BP expanded their distribution here) and picked up a pretty powerful artificial vanilla taste that almost made it seem like a different beer. Not sure if they changed the recipe or something, but I usually don't have such different reactions to the same beer.

What I really liked about Mogli was the quality of the chocolate, and how it was balanced with the other flavors. It wasn't overdone, as I think it is in ST Choklat (a beer I actually like, in small doses). I didn't find it bland at all; it was rich and flavorful without hitting you over the head. I also appreciated the balanced, nuanced flavor from the bourbon-soaked oak spirals (per Caldera's website). Then again, I'm also not a huge fan of BCBS, as I like to taste a little beer in my bourbon barrel beers...

    Different strokes I guess.

I also find BCBS a little too bourbon-y. I've drank VaS twice and loved it equally both times, but my palate has also grown since then (I've had Birth of Tragedy). I don't recall any artificial taste to it, but I'd have to revisit it to think about that one.

I was pretty disappointed with VaS that i got in Seattle. Mogli was much better and anything but bland. It was rich sweet balanced chocolate.

I was also disappointed with VaS. Haven't had Mogli yet. Have a white waxed bottle I've been waiting to get into.
