Picked up the current mixed pack from Cameron's the other day. Tried the Roggenbier first. Found it okay, but, underwhelming. Definitely wouldn't go out of my way to purchase, but, I'd drink it again.
Last night I cracked open the Dark 266. First off, I do like this style of beer. I am in no way a lager fan, but, dark lagers are a different story. Perhaps, it is the "stout-like" qualities that I find in most that I have tried. I do love stout.
Anyways, back to the 266, I absolutely LOVED this beer. The overall rating on the forum is only a 3.22, which I found surprising. Wish it was available in six packs at my local LCBO. At 4.5 ABV this would more than likely be my session beer of choice. Full flavor, smell, goes down beautifully.
Funny how certain brews just "do it" for you.

So, my main reason for this thread is...what beer, regardless of ratings/public opinion does it for you?

    Cheers,
    Frank

    1. Old Flame Brunette, as good as Ayinger Dunkel, miles ahead of Side Launch Dark and King Dark Lager.

    2. Aecht Helles Lager

On of my highest up side deviations in ratings from this site is Indie Ale House Instigator IPA. I really enjoy this when fresh. My only complaint is that I can't get it in smaller bottle size.

I got a couple that might fit this category. While by no means these are even in the top 50 beers I've enjoyed, I've found Wellington's Special Pale Ale and Great Lakes Brewery's Devil's Pale Ale as a couple that I enjoy time and again. Two very different beers, but they both just "do it" for me.

Good stuff. The Old Flame Brunette might be one for me to check out sometime when I'm fishing Lake Scugog. Easy enough to make a stop in Port Perry and pick some up.
I haven't tried any Indie house, or the Devil's Pale Ale yet either.
Having a Red Racer while typing this. Another favorite of mine, but, not one that fits this category as it is ranked as one of the best IPAs in Canada.

Dieu du ciel Dernière Volonté although I heard that the brewery will be discontinuing it.

Cameron's Dark? Yeah I liked it. I liked King Dark Lager more, but it was good.

As far as what beer does it for me. Really depends on the mood, but if I had to pick one thing it's beers that blend multiple aspects seamlessly and somewhat equally.

The Muskoka Spring Oddity how it blends Belgian, Gruit and has an almost pale ale bitter kick. Innis and Gunn Spiced Rum Cask, how it blended sweet and spicy rum with heavier strong ale parts. A lot of Belgians how they master yeast to bring fruity aspects, to high malt endeavours but still have mild but present bitter ends, and Stouts and Porters that boast chocolate, coffee, smoke or berry aspects in addition to their heavy rich bitterness (be it a function of the beer being made or by throwing odd stuff into the mash).

It's another reason I'm not a big fan of IPA, because IPA generally only has one aspect and that's hops, or Quads where it's Malt.
