Can a keg be too full?

Just racked off a DIPA into a 5gal. corny keg. Guess there was more volume in the fermenter than the keg could take; so it overflowed. Should I expect probems with force-carbonating this keg being filled to the top with zero head space? Couldn't bring myself to dump some of it off.

From what I gathered from a recent ProBrewer.com discussion, with less head space it will take longer to carbonate but you should be OK. Or if the internal gas dip tube is submerged it might carbonate faster.

Thanks for the info...I was hoping to tap this keg in a couple days. Will see what happens.

Maybe I'll also turn the C02 up to like 60psi to make sure it's all good.

Consideration of the molecular kinetics involved suggests that the carbonation rate is proportional to the area of the interface between the beer and the CO2, all else being equal. Cheers!

somthing similiar happened to me when I kegged my Pumpkin Ale a couple days ago. I filled the keg almost to the top, leaving just a lil bit of head space, I think it was close to the gas tube. I just put it in the kegerator and hooked up the co2 to 12psi. Should be readyin a couple weeks

You might get beer in the gas line. That can be a pain, particularly if it gets up into the regulator.

Can a keg be too empty though?

Yeah, beer in the gas line != good. But with enough pressure, it shouldn't be a problem.

Here's an option: drink a few pints right now, flat. That will get you enough head space so your gas dip tube is not submerged, and you will never taste a fresher DIPA!
