I am a fan of Georgetown Lucille and especially the hop profile. I live in north Snohomish County and Lucille is not readily available on tap locally. When they have it in stock, I can fill a growler at Norm's in Lake Stevens.

I would like to find something close to Lucille in a can or bottle that is more readily available at a larger grocery store. In my experimentation, I have found Evo IPA, from Two Beers brewing to be somewhat close.

Here is the malt and hops bill for Lucille:

    • Malts – 2 Row, Caramel
    • Hops – Columbus, Centennial, Amarillo, Simcoe, Cascade
    • English Ale Yeast
    • OG: 1.062
    • TG: 1.011
    • ABV 7.0%
    • IBUs 85
I think the Amarillo and Simcoe dry hopping is key. Any ideas for a current can or bottle beer that might go a ways towards satisfying my craving for Lucille? Thanks for any suggestions.

PS: I no longer homebrew, otherwise I would take a crack at some of the Lucille clone recipes out there.

PPS: Georgetown, if you are reading this, think about making some of your beer available outside of draft.

You ever check in at Freds https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2238/?view=ratings ? maybe you could sweet talk the folks at Norms into making a permahandle, if you stop in and buy a growler with enough regularity. Off the top of my head, maybe Schooner Exact's 3 Grid might fit the bill? I seem to remember thinking they have some similarities.

Honestly, whether or not InBev bothers you, 10 Barrel's Joe IPA is relatively similar. It features simcoe, amarillo and mosaic.

So I conducted a taste test with the help of the staff at Norm's and online research on malt and hop profiles. I compared bottles or cans of Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA, Elysian Dayglow IPA, Two Beers Wonderland Trail, Schooner Exact Hopvine IPA, Schooner Exact Evergreen IPA, and Goodlife Descender IPA. I used a growler of Lucille as a comparison control. Out of the beers sampled, Evo IPA and Descender came the closest to matching Lucille.

The good news is that there is a possibility of G'Town cans on the horizon. Granted it may not be until 2018, but I have at least heard that it is in their future.

As far as any direct replacements I have found some of the Schooner Exact beers mentioned above to be similar as well, Hopvine in particular.

I continue to go through the bottles/cans at Norm's. I can report that Schooner Exact 3 Grid IPA is not close to Lucille, but Fremont Interurban IPA is very close. So far, Fremont is the closest match I have found. I have three more cans to compare and will report after those.

Wow, I never would have thought that. I've always found Interurban to be meh-ish, and I think Lucille is much brighter and crisper.

Bear in mind that I am comparing Interurban in the can and Lucille in the growler, both at room temperature. Differences may be more apparent fresh from the tap. I also think the IBU level comes into play. Interurban malt and hop bill: Down & Dirty: 2-Row Pale, Munich, and Honey malts with Chinook, Centennial, and Amarillo hops.
    ABV: 6.2% IBU: 80

I can still taste a difference between the two, Interurban is close but not a clone and I prefer Lucille, but the object of my search is to find something Lucille-like that I can buy at the Marysville Fred Meyer, the closest decent packaged beer selection to me.

I can also report that Black Raven Trickster is not particularly close to Lucille. So right now, out of the packaged IPA's I have tried: Fremont Interurban, Goodlife Descender and Two Beers Evo, in that order, seem to be the closest to Lucille. Further testing, if any, will have to wait until I stop by Norm's again, but I had pretty much picked out all the potential candidates they had in stock, based upon personal recommendations to me, and my online research on malt and hop bills. Please chime in if you have any further ideas on a packaged beer to try.
