I meant to say I drank them side by side specifically to look for differences. Not sure whether to blame senility or Heady Topper for that omission...

Bottle pro: If all beer were in cans, we would have missed out on epic movie scenes like Happy Gilmore threatening Shooter McGavin with a broken bottle or all the clever dialogue in In Bruges about using a bottle as a aweapon.

How many other canned products are BPA free? We're all going to die of cancer anyway, I'll take fresh beer that has been well protected until that time...

I've been a huge advocate of cans for some time and am glad more people are coming around. Better for the beer and the environment, pretty simple.

However, some beers just couldn't be canned...have yet to see a wild ale/lambic or heavily carbonated (BSPA, Tripel, etc.) Belgian style in a can...doesn't mean they couldn't be, but it seems like those beers require thick glass as a precaution.

Con: bottles are easier for the brewer to label. With a can you have to preprint the container which means if you want to change your labels all the old cans become obsolete. With bottles the label is applied after the container is filled which means you can do a bulk order of bottles for many different beers. New labels are less expensive then new cans.

Bottles are better if your not drinking from a glass.

Interesting conversation. My local brewery 'Lazy Monk Brewery' only serves growlers but is planning on canning by the end of the year. I really prefer the 4-packs of 16oz premium beer to both growlers and to bottles.

Could you imagine buying a two hearted in a can? Weird...

Good point. Surly's cans their beer but on the can it states, "Beer for a Glass, From a Can". If you don't plan on pouring your beer into a glass a bottle would be better but with quality beer I tend to always use glassware anyhow.

I had my first bottle of Tripel karmeliet recently and it was one of the most horribly skunked bottles of beer that I've ever experienced. I'd prefer to see that beer in a can than buy one of those pretty fun to open corked and caged green bottles again.

Biggest con is that I can't smash a can on the end of the bar and shank Miikezombie with it. Ripping it open and just cutting him with it seems so Blaa.....

Cans can take quite a bit of pressure. Soda is generally more heavily carbonated than any beer (like 6-8 atmospheres). And the consequences of a failure are much less terrifying with a can. My main negative is that I can't can my homebrew without spending $$$$.

Regarding BPA, the people at our lab got pretty excited about this a few years ago and were calmed down by the data they saw. Most studies indicate that not much BPA goes into solution below 130F and if you let your beer get that hot, you won't drink it anyway. Definitely don't microwave or bake anything that has BPA content, but otherwise, the panic seems misplaced to me. BPA is bad stuff but it's hard to get much into your body.

But you can smash the can on his forehead... particularly rewarding if it's a full can.

I currently have a full vertical of Ten Fidy, so it's nice to know that holding on to my cans sounds like it was a good call.

Are you crazy? His head is like an anvil! I would end up with beer all over myself.

If you can find it, Tripel Karmeliet also comes in 4 packs of brown 11.2 oz bottles. I pretty much only buy beers like Tripel Karmeliet and Saison Dupont in those now, getting burned by skunked beer sucks.
