Total newb question im sure but here goes: Can I use leaf and pellet hops together in the same batch?

I'm planning on brewing this APA recipe this weekend and happen to have a few ounces of whole leaf Amarillo hops from a brew club group purchase this summer. I have pellet hops for the Citra and Cascade and don't mind buying the pellet Amarillo hops if I have to but if I can save a few bucks I'd love to.

    Certainly.

I do it all the time, just knowing that I'll need a little more volume due to the loss of wort from the leaf hops, unless you bag them and want to drain/squeeze to get as much liquid back from them.

Sure you can. Some people like to use hop bags, especially for pellets, to help separate hop residues from the wort. The size of the bag might vary w/ the amount of leaf hops.

If you've got a spigot on your kettle, make sure you bag or use a "bazooka tube" for the leaf. But, yeah, t'aint nothing wrong with using both types.

    EDIT:

Ha! Just noticed that's my recipe...good luck and hope you like it!

Well that was quick, thanks for all the insight gent's.

I brew BIAB and have a 15G kettle with a ball valve (no bazooka tube) so I usually shoot a little high on my water calculations to account for grain and hop absorption anyway. Maybe ill look into getting a few small hop bags for the Amarillo additions.

Great looking recipe @JohnSnowNW Im looking forward to brewing it. I had to modify it a bit as I don't get GP in my neck of the woods but im keeping the hop bill exactly as is.

I'm sorry you can't get a hold of the GP, it'll be tasty whatever you're going with.

Also, just thought I'd make sure you noticed that I removed the flaked barley from the original recipe.

    I did notice that, thanks!

Would I mess up a good thing adding a small amount of Victory malt for a bit more orange color in this? I haven't been able to nail that aspect of any batch that i've done to this point and my perfectionist self wants to see it done.

If you use it just for color, but I don't feel the recipe would benefit much from the flavor Victory provides. Of course, I've never brewed this recipe with it

I do it all the time. I like leaf hops, but you can't always get the varieties you want in that form, so I wind using combos pretty regularly. One thing to watch: whole/leaf hops tend to give you a little less utilization, so be sure to account for that.
