Can smells permeate or affect my cellared beer?

Hi folks. Bit of an odd question here. Been reviewing for a couple years but this is my first forum post.

My girlfriend bought soap that had to be cured before use. The directions were basically to stick it in a cool, dry place for 3 weeks. So where better, she thought, than my 54° wine fridge.

I didn't care at first until I though hmm, can the smell of the soap permeate and in anyway affect the bottles? We're talking a log of soap here btw, not just one bar.

So I took the soap out (over a week ago) and my wine fridge still reeks of it. I could maybe air it out, but then, obviously, the beers inside would have to go elsewhere for a few hours.

Does the soap smell matter? Can it permeate or affect the beer? Thanks!

Huh. Corks are very slightly permeable and very slightly absorbent, so anything you have with a cork could experience a minor effect, but I'm pretty confident that three weeks of exposure (plus whatever residual is in there) isn't going to be noticeable. I mean, you've probably seen molded corks sealing in perfectly fine beer, and while admittedly the mold may actually have a desirable effect in tiny doses, I still think it's a sign that the smell of the air outside the bottle is not a big deal. And caps are similarly near-perfect, so again, you're probably fine.

The bottle caps are air tight (or should be). So the soap aroma should not be able to penetrate the seal. If it does, you would've had oxidized, flat beer anyway. You should be good.

Gonna buck the trend and recommend a thorough cleaning of the fridge and immediate removal of bottles until smell is gone. There are good products for odor removal easily available nowadays,

I had no idea there was a type of soap that wasn't ready to roll straight out the pack

I think you'll be fine though

Yeah, I seem to recall @sierranevadabill posting that the crowns are oxygen permeable, if ever so slightly. In that case I wouldn't take a chance either.

Yes. Pretend to throw them away (drink them) and tell her she owes you replacements.

I guess you're not on SoapAdvocate every day or you'd know such things. How do you live with yourself and your heathen macro-showering? I need to convert you with a side-by-side bathing.

Craft soap! Be worried if she starts a soap cellar, starts trading, and spends hours in line for new releases!

You scoff listen I bought soap. organic soap. Myrrh and one had papaya and coconut, raw shea butter, african black soap - there was sale. So It has to last. I did not think to cool it or dry it out with cold But it came unwrapped. No plastic. So good organic packaging and then I wrapped it to keep moisture in. If you can smell it it is going away I would think. =)

I wonder if you could put an open box of baking soda in there? Would it work like it does in your normal fridge?

Many seem to doubt it (other than my friends who have tried one of the beers) but smells can most certainly get through a cap. They're slightly permeable. I waxed a bunch of bottles with scented wax (because I had it available and wasn't thinking it would matter) and the smell/flavor of the beers were significantly changed. I don't remember how long I left the wax on before cracking a bottle and finding out my mistake and then breaking the wax off any remaining bottles, but it was definitely a lot longer than a few weeks. That said, I'd try to clean out the fridge and eliminate as much of the odor as possible.

I really should've traded that waxed VR away for some lowball offer to someone who claims caps are a perfect seal...it was not good and it took hours at a share before the bottle was finally finished.

I know how you feel mang, my wife put a Scentsy Pot in my garage/brewhouse/workout room to "make it a little bit more inviting". Sheesh, she also had me replace the one dim and bare bulb in the corner that I used for illumination with LED lighting.

Watch out man, throw pillows, inspirational fridge magnets, and doilies are coming next for your wine fridge.
